Default The thing no one is talking about Johnson's insane bridge

Johnson continues to refuse to allow any engineers see the plans for his insane bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland, so we can only guess about how much it would cost. The general outline that he has released is of 54 towers, all of whom are 5 times taller than has ever been tried before. This would be insanely expensive, and take much longer than what Johnson is claiming.

But what no one is talking about is how would it be defended. Johnson has broken the peace treaty, and attacked the very reason that the Catholics were willing to have peace. Given Irish tendencies to use terrorism in war, it is obvious that the Catholics would go after links to the UK. Let's say Johnson pays $500 billion on the bridge, it is an easy target for anyone with a truck and a bomb.

But they can just check every truck or car that enters the bridge right? Well that makes the trip between Northern Ireland and Scotland much longer, raises costs a lot, and becomes a virtual border checkpoint. The last one is odd, because Johnson threw away peace to avoid a border checkpoint, and then he is going to have to get the border checkpoint anyway?

To my mind the best option is to have two tunnels landing at the Isle of Man, joining Belfast and Liverpool.

A tunnel between Ireland and England via the Isle of Man?

The most direct route for Boris Johnson’s idea of a 22-mile bridge would involve crossing Beaufort’s Dyke, a trench that contains more than 1m tonnes of unexploded munitions, plus chemical weapons and radioactive waste.

Anyone who believes in this crap should try driving on the little, narrow roads in Dumfries and Galloway. The whole project would cost even more than his nutty English railway.

The tunnel is the obvious way to go. A bridge is insane. Johnson is pushing a bridge, because he wants people to be able to drive back and forth. A train makes more sense.

But lets start spelling out why even a tunnel is insane, and double insane when you talk about a tunnel between the Isle of Man.

A tunnel from Scotland to North Ireland would be as long as the Chunnel, but would serve far fewer people. Connecting the half billion people in Europe to Great Britain has turned out to be barely cost effective. It bankrupted everyone involved with the initial investment in the Chunnel. It was a mess. But that is 100 times more profitable than connecting Great Britain to the less than 2 million in Northern Ireland. Even if you throw in the less than 5 million people in the Republic of Ireland, you are not getting anywhere near enough people to support a tunnel.

But Havana Moon is worried about the tunnel going from Scotland to Northern Ireland, so he proposes going from England to the Isle of Man to Northern Ireland. This requires two tunnels both double the length of the Chunnel. It is doable, but would be wildly expensive. And remember, we are talking about a project that will be a huge loss even at the cheaper path.

And there is still the threat of terrorism....

When someone is losing, like Johnson is, they tend to come up with crazy ideas of how they can reverse that losing. It makes them look more desperate.

For once I agree with you, I have driven the A75 many times to go to Loch Ryan and Belfast. Not a nice road, too many crazy bastards in lorries especially late at night.

I bet you wouldn't say that about an even nuttier high speed railway to Fishguard.

More bullshit about terrorism, many ferries criss-cross the Irish Sea and not one has ever been attacked. So why would a bridge or tunnel be any different?

It's what's known a ' growth carrot '. Capitalist assholes present these schemes to trick their dumbass followers into thinking that they must all sacrifice their lives and environment for the cause of ' progress ' and ' growth ' GDP stands for Government Death Projects.

Johnson can't face serious questioning on anything, so he distracts attention with bridges to Nova Scotia or whatever. It has nothing to do with anything serious. He has sacked the Chancellor because he kept doing tedious sums.

This is the racist cunt that thought the proposal to put dams across the North Sea was serious. I still can't stop laughing about that one.
