feb 7 2020 Sen. Bernie Sanders called for an end to cash bail across the country at the Democratic debate on Friday night, saying there are hundreds of thousands of people locked up because they can’t afford a several-hundred-dollar fee.

Sanders made his call to end bail as the candidates debated America’s criminal justice system and how it affects minorities in the United States.

“Most people don’t know this. Tonight in America, 200,000 people are in jail without having been convicted of anything. Two hundred thousand people — because they can’t afford the 500 bucks they need to get out of jail,” Sanders said.

“That is outrageous. We are going to end cash bail in America,” he added.

If the only incentive to going to court is to get bail back, and most bailees pay through a bail bondsman, and therefore do not get any money back, by Texting Driver's logic, none would be going to court now.

what?? you still pay a bondsman 10% in most cases of the bail - if you don't show up then you are responsible for the entire bail amount. As usual you are clueless.

It's been shown that simply releasing without bail ( and low level offenses without a prior record use get released on "own recognizance" ) for repeat offenders encourages more crime

Of course. He comes after you to make you pay and the arrestee know that. He knows he better show up in court.

Even if you think he deserves a second chance after being released from prison, why should that second chance include judging who gets out on bail? It is the fox guarding the chicken coup. Imagine you get arrested for a crime you did not commit, and want to get out of prison. The guard at the jail tells you to call a bail bondsman he suggests. You do not know that he is getting a kickback. You then pay the bail bondsman the most he thinks you can pay. Then Chapman investigates you, and finds out you can pay more. If you do not pay him, he violates your bail, and you will have to wait in jail for months. So you keep paying him until you can pay no more. Months later, you are found not guilty, but you never get your money back.

It was not even manslaughter. Chapman actually was convicted of FIRST DEGREE MURDER.

At least trump's good friend Don King was only found guilty of manslaughter, though I tend to think he was guilty of far more when he stomped another human to death.

Can there be any two points of view further apart than Obama and Don King? Obama says blacks (and really all people) should get an education to improve their situation. HAHAHA. You obviously have no idea how bail is handled. The bondsman takes 10% for himself and you never get that money back. That's why most prisoners try to make bail with their own money. THINK

If it's a low level offense, with no priors - then you probably don't need to post bail.

But repeat offenders and serious crimes require bail -same as it's been thru centuries of English common law

If a cop encounters you, you go directly to jail. can't afford bail, you sit it out, as much as a year. "in jail" doen't mean long term holding for a "traffic ticket" -it's like overnight holding in most cases.

Then you see a judge, and pay the fine..why are you entitled to drive (considered a "privilege")
and break traffic laws just because you are poor?
