Default Trump suggested Medicare and Social Security are the 'easiest' things to cut

President Trump backtracked Wednesday on his 2016 campaign promise to protect funding for entitlements like Medicare and Social Security, suggesting in an interview with CNBC that he would be open to slashing "at some point" them since they're "the easiest" thing to cut.

You would be amazed at how many Trump supporters on this forum collect ss disability benefits, ss retirement benefits, and Medicare benefits.

I wonder if they will be cheering for Trump to cut their benefits?

I saw this yesterday, had a moment of excitement that we might actually address entitlement reform, but it's a load of cr*p. He did not say he would cut anything nor will he as he cuts very little spending.

I doubt seriously any cuts would be applied to current recipients. Some reforms have to be made to keep benefits at present levels. One suggestion, without raising taxes, would be to tie benefits to total income. Those making over $150,000, for example, could lose some SS benefits and that amount could increase as income increases. That would be better than raising taxes.

If trump is reelected, there will almost certainly be stealth cuts. The amount of money people receive will not be adjusted for inflation. trump is eager for high inflation economics, so that could mean a 50% cut in four years.

I'd be inclined not to spend my evenings dreaming up novel ways to troll the entire population if my head were on the chopping block like Trump*, but
hey, that's why you dorks voted for him and not me I suppose.

BOTH ARE SUBJECT TO MASSIVE FRAUD...AND NEED TO BE TRIMMED.

WHY DO YOU SUPPORT FRAUDULENT THEFT OF OUR TAX DOLLARS??

AND MONEY GIVEN TO ILLEGALS AS WELL??

Your Medicare is in danger. Each year, roughly 10 cents of every dollar budgeted for the giant health insurance program is stolen or misdirected before it helps any enrollee. Looked at another way, about $1,000 is lost per Medicare member through theft or waste each year. That is according to the federal government’s reckoning. But it could be far worse. Malcolm Sparrow, a Harvard University professor and leading expert on health care fraud, says the true amount lost to fraud, abuse or improper payments could be 20 percent, or even as high as 30 percent.

“The fact of the matter is, we don’t know how much is lost,” Sparrow says. “We ought to know. We shouldn’t have to guess. But the truth would be hard to swallow.”

I disagree (although Obama favored a lower COLA) because it would actually lower people's benefits.

Instead, they can eliminate parts of the program that were not part of the original program and do not hurt anybody who really needs it---increase or eliminate early retirement, eliminate full benefits for those still working who have reached full retirement age, eliminate benefits for those formerly married to somebody at least ten years....
