The mysterious coronavirus is now spreading more rapidly and little is still known about it, China's senior health officials said, as Beijing grapples with shortages of hazmat suits and protective masks.
"The virus' transmission ability has become stronger," National Health Commission Minister Ma Xiaowei said at a press briefing on Sunday.

Ma said that the previously-unknown coronavirus, which has already killed 56 people in China, is spreading faster, while the outbreak is entering a "more serious and complicated phase."

The official noted that the government's knowledge of the new virus remains limited and they remain puzzled about the risks posed by its mutations. Beijing will dispatch additional teams of medics to assist patients and study the virus, he added.

The death toll from the 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak in China has reached 80, with hundreds of new infections detected. Meanwhile, US public health officials have confirmed new cases of the disease in Los Angeles and Arizona.
With 24 new deaths reported in Hubei Province – the epicenter of the outbreak – the overall toll from the novel coronavirus in China now stands at 80, with nearly 2,800 confirmed cases countrywide.

China has also revealed that the virus can spread before any symptoms show. The country's Health Minister Ma Xiaowei confirmed the bad news on Sunday, which has panicked some US doctors.

The death toll has surpassed 100, which is not that great. The problem is that with contagious diseases it can always get worse. There was a time that the death toll for AIDS or the black death were below 100, and then they killed millions.

AIDS is a good example of what can go wrong. It is a retro-virus, so had spread far and wide before anyone knew there was a problem. Hopefully we can stop this outbreak before it spreads far and wide.

When considering that pollution in much of the world was worse in the early 1900s than it is now, I don't see how capitalism and climate really have that much of a connection.

If it really was a matter of the 2 being connected, then we would have seen a change in climate trends when the industrialized world started cleaning up its pollution in the 70s. That didn't really happen. Now it is true that the developing world has been putting out a lot of pollution now. The amount that China pollutes today is more than a lot of the rest of the world combined. India also pollutes a lot.

However, as countries develop, they usually go through an industrialization period that pollutes a lot, followed by a period where they start to rein in pollution. China hasn't quite reached the cleaning up period yet, nor has India. The West, overall, has been becoming cleaner with time.
