The writer had to make the target Southern Baptists in order to make the story feasible for satire.

If he had instead mentioned a Muslim sect, it would be too far-fetched to work. Iceland would never have the balls to make that declaration towards Muslims, and the writer would likely face a lot of backlash for not being PC.
