Trumps ‘tariffs worked,’ Trump’s strategy forced China to agree to a trade deal

“I keep wondering when people are going to recognize that it is historic that tariffs did succeed,” said CNBC’s Jim Cramer.

U.S. and Chinese officials were set to sign the “phase one” trade agreement at the White House on Wednesday morning.

“The Chinese were kind of accepting that they had to get something in order to keep the American market,” Cramer said.

CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Wednesday that “tariffs worked” as a means to prod China to agree to a “phase one” trade deal with the United States.

“I keep wondering when people are going to recognize that it is historic that tariffs did succeed,” Cramer said on “Squawk on the Street,” shortly before U.S. and Chinese officials were set to sign the initial trade agreement at the White House later in the morning.

“Tariffs were not supposed to work,” said Cramer, who has all along been a supporter of President Donald Trump’s hard-line approach toward China.

However, the U.S. is leaving in place 25% tariffs on a vast, $250 billion array of Chinese industrial goods and components used by U.S. manufacturers.( JIC)

The Chinese were supposed to be able to get around them. It didn’t happen,” the “Mad Money” host added. “The Chinese were kind of accepting that they had to get something in order to keep the American market.”

It was a crappy deal that was a diversion from the impeachment.
Trump has fractured our international alliances. He imposed taxes(tariffs) on American consumers. He has greatly increased farmers bankruptcies, he has spent mega billions trying to bail farmers out for his stupid acts. Trump may be as dumb as you are.

Then why do we still have major tariffs against China today? We aren't even back to where we were before Trump started his "easy to win" trade war with China

    Pfft.

China agrees to buy $50B of agricultural products this year, which is actually a gain of $29B before Trump's tariffs.

But Trump's tariffs have cost US farmers $11B, and Trump had to spend $28B on a farmer bailout to buy their votes.

So the net-net is that the US lost $10B in this fiasco.

That sound you're not hearing are teabags being stapled to the faces of fat Conservative racists.

China is patient. They are in no rush and ignore Trump's craziness whenever they can. Trump was facing impeachment and wanted to divert attention and claim a victory. So he gave China what they wanted and got hi shot at a news story.

And the markets rose again. I'm pretty sure that he believes that if the markets stay up he can't lose.

If China was patient they would not have signed.
They suffered far more and had to come to the table to stop it. DJT let them attempt to save face for internal consumption.
Trump was patient and held his line.

Trade War Falsehoods. Trump’s trade war with China resulted in numerous falsehoods, some of which were summed up in this one statement by the president on May 3: “We’re charging China tariffs. We’ve never taken in 10 cents from China, and now we’re taking in billions and billions of dollars.”
As we have written, the tariffs are taxes paid by U.S. importers in the form of customs duties, and to some extent by U.S. consumers in the form of higher prices. “The continued stability of import prices for goods from China means U.S. firms and consumers have to pay the tariff,” a Federal Reserve Bank of New York study confirmed last month.
Also, the U.S. has collected billions in customs duties on Chinese imports for years, so Trump’s claim about “never taken in 10 cents” doesn’t add up.
Trump also has repeatedly taken credit for reducing trade deficits, even though the opposite is true. He has claimed that trade deficits “went down,” describing the U.S. trade balance as “changing rapidly” with Japan and “fairly rapidly” in the case of the European Union. The most recent government figures show that the total U.S. trade deficit in goods and services during the most recent 12 months on record (ending in October) was $635 billion — an increase of $132 billion, or 26.2%, compared with 2016. That includes higher trade deficits with Japan and the EU (see table 3).
