Default Keeping "Nonviolent" Criminals Out of Prison

    Is moronic.

Burglary is a nonviolent offense. Ever had your house broken into? I bet you'd want the scumbag that did it punished.

Illegal firearms possession, nonviolent offense. You lefties want the government to confiscate everyone's guns, but never want existing gun laws to be enforced.

Embezzlement, nonviolent offense. Would anyone argue that someone who embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from a charity or school shouldn't go to prison?

Tax fraud, nonviolent offense. People need to pay their "fair share", right?

Grand Theft Auto (the crime, not the video game), nonviolent offense. Let's allow scumbags to steal people's cars with no penalty or deterrence. Ever have your car stolen? I bet you'd want the punk who made you miss work punished.

There are countless examples of nonviolent offenses. The idea that the crooks who do those things shouldn't be punished is complete horse manure!

It's a combination of needing punishment to be a deterrent and there to be consequences vs the many realities of what just locking everyone up would entail.

Jail isn't the only answer for all crimes.

Not everyone is being locked up. Only the criminals should be locked up. Whether crime was violent or non violent is irrelevant.

Why not look at alternatives for nonviolent offenders? House arrest, heavy community service, steep fines, lengthy probabtion, and work release are all alternatives. Our prisons are clogged up with non violent offenders while others manage to skate because of it. Prison hasn't shown to be a good deterrent and should only be used for those that have shown that they can't be trusted to be in society.

Alternatives are ok for first, maybe second time nonviolent offenders. But these guys with a rap sheet as long as your arm, often committing the same types of "nonviolent" offenses over and over, need to be locked up. Prison is a great deterrent (as long as they are in it ). When scumbags are behind bars, they can't be out victimizing innocent people.

. It sounds like we're on the same page. There are plenty of people who screw up, where any punishment is a deterrent and they never commit another crime. Those who show no ability to reform should face increasing punishment and if they show that they can't function in society they should be separated from it.

People in jail for weed both using and selling should be released immediately.
We should stop the bail system. Most of those in jail cannot afford bail. The court system is slow. https://ideas.ted.com/how-the-bail-s...-can-be-fixed/
You can get a traffic offense and wind up in jail if you cannot afford the ticket. They get a warrant out for your arrest and if the police encounter you, it is off to jail, often for a year . It is a crime to be poor.
Your life is ruined. Your job is gone and your family is in trouble. https://www.idrivesafely.com/dmv/mic...and-penalties/
And you get probation. You have to pay for that too. How about community service. Many locales use that as free labor. you pay for being allowed to work for the city.

How about those that commit non-violent crimes stop doing so or bitching about paying the price for their choices?

The person that chooses to commit crimes is the only one that can decide to stop. Therefore, they are their own deterrent. Nothing you, I , or anyone/anything else does will deter them until they decide to deter themselves.

As for not being able to be trusted in society, if someone commits a crime, non-violent isn't the focus. That they committed a crime is. A lack of trust isn't based on the nature of the crime but that a crime was committed. My level of trust isn't higher for a person that embezzles money because it was non-violent.

A victim of a non-violent offense is still a victim. The level of trust Dirt talks about doesn't change based on the nature of the crime. For me, I don't trust a non-violent offender more because it was non-violent. I don't trust any criminal simply because they're a criminal.

That is because the person that screwed up made the choice to no longer be a screw up. You nor I can make that choice for him/her.
