We won the war in Iraq and Afghanistan in weeks and months; and with the least cost in lives of any wars we have engaged in.

We removed their government from power. We didn't "win" anything when 20 years later the country is worse off than before.

A foreign invasion and occupation is a disaster whether it was carried out by one nation or 36 under UN.

Democracy never blooms under a foreign invasion. Nationalism is going to trump everything else and they are going to fight as long as their lands are occupied. Iraq did not even have al queda fighters until the U. S. invasion destabilized the region.

It is a little complicated, but siding with democracy freaks is not the solution. Taiwan (Chiang Kai-shek 1887 – 1975) had to give up its seat on the Security Council when China was seated in 1971. That meant that two enemy governments with powerful militaries controlled two seats on the S.C.

FDR had been dead for several years when the Chinese Civil War happened. FDR had a very close relationship with the Nationalist Chinese. I do not know he could have saved Nationalist China, but he probably would have tried. We will never know, because he was dead, and not losing China.

trump has made a lot of noise about selling Taiwan out to China for some concessions. No Democrat would have done the same.
