You can fight back if someone attacks you. It was a pretty stupid thing for the CSA to attack America after its peaceful secession. Makes you question whether they really wanted to have a separate nationality.

You can fight back when you want to leave and someone is trying to keep you from doing so.

What's stupid is you think that someone can't leave because you oppose them doing so.

Did you support the colonists leaving British rule?

You claiming the Southern States didn't have Congressman and Senators representation in Congress.
"No taxation without representation" ,was what the colonist had to deal with.
That didn't apply to the Southern States.
Fact is the Southern States took part in the 1860 election, didn't like the outcome, and insanely followed SC into succession.Losing all "Southern honor".
Then got there ass kicked, and still today still crying.

If you think secession was about the election of 1860 alone, you're an idiot.

The colonists leaving British rule wasn't entirely about "no taxation without representation".

Do you consider the colonists traitors?

Do you know more slaves were held under the U.S. flag than the Confederacy?

Doesn't change that there were more slaves under the U.S. flag than the Confederate flags.

    Were the colonists traitors?

I thought you knew history. Apparently not.

Were the colonists traitors? You seem to be ignoring that question.

Who said they couldn't leave? Buchanan certainly never said such a thing. It wasn't until after the CSA attacked America that it was suddenly called an unlawful rebellion.

If the Southern States had petitioned Congress to leave that would be a different matter.
But if you take part in a national election, then quit because you don't like the outcome.
    That's beneath contempt.
The mistake was made after the war by not confiscating and resettling all the land owned by Confederate soldiers and politicians.
And even that is going easy.
The whole damn bunch of them should have been hanged starting with R.E.Lee!
The Founding Fathers knew if the Revolution had failed they all would have been round up and hanged.

Clearly, nullification is/was unconstitutional, and it warranted being put down by force, as Andrew Jackson threatened to do. Secession, while obviously the move of a losing faction, does not pretend to operate unconstitutionally within the union. It's a much easier act to justify. Frankly, I don't think it would have become viewed as an inherently illegal act if the south had actually seceded peacefully.

The only way to secede peacefully,is thru the legal system, starting with a petition to Congress.
The choice the South chose was Treason, and felony thief. They tried to steal the Southern States.
Louisiana stole Arms from the US Arsenal.
Which triggered Sherman to resign from President of LSU.

The states are not the property of the national government. Federal facilities within states, such as bases, parks, and complexes, would still remain national possessions until such time as deals and/or concessions could be arranged. The CSA decided not to wait, and attacked Ft Sumter.
