I would not want to be a Republican up for election, having voted to not remove Trump once the dam breaks. THere will likely be hell to pay, kinda like when the dam broke on W.
Excellent point.
The problem for Senate Republicans is if they vote against Trump they face immediate Tweet-slapping whether or not the vote carries and President Trump is immediately removed from office.
The tweet-shaming will have an effect on Trump fans regardless of removal. If President Trump is removed from office, Trump fans will fly into a rage of frustration. They would hold that against anyone who voted to convict, regardless of the facts of the case. It's not like they will suddenly admit all the facts they currently deny. The RWPM will go into overdrive blaming Democrats, the deep state, the Bidens, the media, etc.
It would not surprise me that if President Trump is removed from office that he immediately ramps up his campaign to get reelected in 2020. Would that even be legal? For a previously impeached President to run again for the same office he was thrown out of? I don't see anything which prevents it.
