I haven't been there but was in Scotland a month ago. Drove all over. People were cool, yes. My overall impression of Edinburgh was going back in time to 1960. Most of the buildings are three or four story walk-ups, built in the late 1800's, sandstone facades, and heated by coal stoves. Looks like most if not all converted to natural gas. That black soot from decades of coal smoke and diesel exhaust coating all the buildings. Unlike New York, where they have long been media-blasted clean, I didn't see any old buildings cleaned up. The streets were clean but that dark grey- black everywhere.

Past the city there was no development at all. Like a demarcation zone. Nothing but very old homesteads and sheep. Lots of sheep.

Very green. Water everywhere.

Large mountains with no trees. Covered in heather, but no trees like in the eastern US. Weird.

Country roads were mostly one lane. Pull-offs for opposing traffic about every 100 years. I rounded the Isle of Skye and passed about 20 cars coming the opposite direction.
