Russia is not an enemy of Americans.
The Russian government is a competitor and, in some cases, the Kremlin plays an adversarial role in trying to out compete us in the geopolitical context.

Americans have legitimate grievances against the actions taken by the Kremlin, and we have every right to defend the integrity of our liberal democracy.

Russia has legitimate grievances against the American government, which in some cases stretch back decades.

Russia is a proud and independent nation that is never going to be a member of NATO, they are never going to allow themselves to be perceived as a junior partner of the United States. They are going to go their own way, and pursue their own interests within their Eurasian sphere of influence. Someday, they may develop their own brand of legitimate representative democracy, which takes into account their unique and conservative orthodox culture.

What both nations need to do is to sincerely recognize the mutual and legitimate grievances that have developed over decades, and while recognizing that we will never be allies, at least work to ameliorate those grievances and strive to work productively on a range on international issues where we have mutual interests.

I was the first one out of the gate here to state that the nation of Russia is not an enemy.

On the other hand, I do not see any point downplaying, dismissing, disregarding the fact that Russian state security services interfered in our elections, and have been attempted to covertly undermine our democratic republic and our democratic institutions.

Some of us believe we should defend our democracy, and take appropriate defensive measures and punitive actions so the Kremlin knows there is a cost to interfering in our elections.

Many Trump lovers on this forum have made explicitly clear they are not interested in defending America, and they come down on the side of the Kremlin and the KGB, GRU, and FSB.
