Fox News continued its spat with President Donald Trump this week, when host Neil Cavuto blasted the commander-in-chief's criticism of the network as "fake news."
Cavuto jumped to the defense of his colleague Chris Wallace—who came in for criticism from Trump over questions leveled at House Minority Whip Steve Scalise.
Wallace had pursued an aggressive line of questioning with Scalise, grilling the whip on the impeachment inquiry, prompting the president to describe the Fox host as "nasty and obnoxious" in a tweet on November 17.
But Wallace's colleague Cavuto panned Trump's attack, commenting on Your World on Monday that the president did not distinguish between attacking "fake news" and real reports, describing the president's own comment as "fake."
"What if the news being reported is accurate, the facts are good they just sound bad? My colleague Chris Wallace has discovered again the president doesn't distinguish," Cavuto said.
"You are not the first president to say the media has it out for you. No less than press darling John F. Kennedy himself had his moments with the media. We can't please all.
"The best we can do as journalists is to be fair to all, including you, Mr. President. That's not fake doing that, what is fake is not doing that, what is fake is saying Fox never used to do that. Mr. President, we have always done that," Cavuto said, explaining that the press "are not entitled to praise you but we are obligated to question you, and to be fair to you. Even if it risks inviting your wrath. You are free to rage. All we are free to do is report and let the viewers decide."It is a break with tradition for Fox News, which has long been a favored network of the president. Previously Trump had blasted other networks as "fake news" but suggested he trusted Fox News. However, in recent months the relationship between Trump and Fox News appears to have soured, with the president publicly commenting on more than one occasion that the network is not what it used to be.
"This kind of dumb and unfair interview would never have happened in the @FoxNews past," the president tweeted following Wallace's Scalise interview over the weekend. Several months earlier Trump had lambasted the network over a poll that showed him losing in a head-to-head matchup with four Democratic presidential hopefuls.
"I don't know what's happening with Fox," The Hill reported the president saying at the time. "Fox is Fake News. There's no question about it,"
