San Francisco is one of the most naturally beautiful cities in the world. There's a reason people from all over the globe want to come here. But if you talk to a tourist the first thing 95% of them will ask, if it isn't for directions, is why is the City so dirty? Why so many homeless? Why the open drug use?

For those of us who live here it's what we see everyday so you internalize it almost as normal. For folks who don't experience it on a daily basis its shocking. The Chronicle has printed letters from tourists from around the world about their dismay at what they saw while visiting.

You just described pretty much every city in this country. Chicago has had a lot of mob influences in its politics through its history. Try showing me a city that doesn't have bad areas or iffy politicians though.

It's about degree. Boston is notoriously corrupt, for example, yet has never managed to supplant Chicago as the king of corruption. Violent districts of LA, Philly, and Baltimore, do not presently draw the attention that Chicago does. That aspect is not really part of its historical image, however, and is a fairly recent phenomenon.
