    NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner warns of 'long way to go' as crews battle bushfires in New South Wales and Queensland

    Raging bushfires have now reached the outskirts of Sydney, destroying a number of properties, officials say.

    Scores of fires are still burning in New South Wales amid temperatures of 35C (95F) and winds of 80km/h (50mph).

    A feared southerly wind change has now occurred but the "catastrophic" day feared has largely been avoided.

    No deaths were reported on Tuesday but fire chiefs warned that conditions meant the dangers facing the state were far from over.

    Australia bushfire death toll rises as fire risk spreads west

    Four people are now known to have died in ferocious blazes on east coast with high temperatures raising risk in west.

    The death toll in the bushfires raging across Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state has risen to four after a man’s body was found in a scorched forest, as authorities warned on Thursday of worsening weather conditions to come.

    The fires have destroyed about one million hectares (2.5 million acres) of farmland and bush over the past week, fuelled by tinder-dry conditions and high winds after three years of drought that experts say has been exacerbated by climate change.

    The massive bushfires raging across Australia are expected to flare up again as temperatures rise in coming days.

    So far, four people have died from the fires, which are feeding off drought-stricken farmland and bush.

    Conditions improved on Friday but crews were still battling about 120 blazes across New South Wales and Queensland.

    And authorities have warned that a bank of hot air is expected to sweep across the country, escalating the fires.

    Temperatures across Western Australia are predicted to hit mid-40Cs at the weekend.

    The fires have razed about 300 homes, and burnt through over 1 million hectares of land in NSW.

    'Like a giant ball of fire. The biggest flames I have ever seen'

    Fire crews and townspeople on the mid-north coast of NSW are reeling with exhaustion, heartache and fear

    At a Rural Fire Service base in the village of Marlee on the New South Wales mid-north coast this week, a young firefighter named Kieron Gatehouse tried to describe what it looks like when a mountain catches fire.

    “Tuesday night was the craziest shit I have ever seen,” he tells Guardian Australia.

    “There’s a big mountain you can normally see over there, you can’t tell because of the smoke, but on Tuesday night it had flames licking 60 metres, 70 metres off the top of it. Easy.

    “You can’t, you can’t even describe. Like a giant ball of fire. There were 50-metre gum trees with flames just licking off the top. The biggest flames I have ever seen.”

    Fulfilling the forecast promise, Perth, in Australia's west, has beaten a 122-year-old temperature record. On Saturday, the thermometer reached 40.4 degrees Celsius (104.7 degrees Fahrenheit) in the city and was even higher at the airport. This beats the previous record for this month, indeed for the whole of spring, set in 1897.

    In fact, of the highest temperatures reported worldwide on Saturday, all 10 were reported in Australia. Topping the table at 45.9C (114.6F) was Marble Bar, also in Western Australia in the Pilbara region.

    It's too late': All Aussie states on fire

    Australian states burn as dire bushfire conditions continue
    All six of Australia's states are burning, with hire fire alerts issued across the country as residents endure dangerous conditions.

    Crews in Victoria are battling against the most severe Code Red conditions in parts of the state;

    In South Australia catastrophic conditions have destroyed numerous homes overnight and today;

    In NSW crews continue to battle blazes after a horror two weeks;

    In Queensland crews are taking advantage of easing conditions, but fires continue to burn around the state;

    Crews are also battling blazes in Tasmania.

    Massive Mildura dust storm leaves Victorian town 'unliveable' amid 40C heat

    Residents say such storms now occur on a weekly basis, as topsoil from drought-ravaged farms is blown through the town

    As Victoria issued a code red bushfire alert and Melbourne sweltered through a record-equalling November temperature, the residents of Mildura walked out of their homes at midday on Thursday to see a dust storm rolling in.

    On a day of catastrophic fire danger and 40C heat, high winds swept the dry topsoil into the air and across the state. In Mildura, in far north-western Victoria, dramatic footage and pictures showed the sky turn an angry red.

    Unlivable. So who is going to take in hundreds of thousands of Australian climate refugees ? Just where in the new fucked-up world does the Denier Choir think is going to escape ?
