The whole point is that several of the reddest states rely on those handout programs more than anyone. The stats have been tossed around more times then I can count. Mississippi being on top. Perfectly fine if they weren't always complaining about government assistance programs. Biting the hand that feeds is so lame. I'd be under Big Pharma's thumb without the help myself.

The southern states always had affinity for oligarchy and feudal serfdom.

The northern states had more of an affinity for liberal and neoliberal capitalism

To some extent we are still living with that historical legacy today

I totally disagree with Trump's threat to cut federal emergency and forest management funds simply because the leadership of the state can't seem to grasp the need for forest management. All that would do is harm Joe Six Pack who lost everything to the fires thru no fault of his own. I don't know the answers but hurting the citizens isn't one of them.

Got any examples of Mississippi complaining about government assistance?

Southerners don't want to live off the government more than anyone else. Talking about them getting more from the government than the state gives, is meaningless to them. They were born into a society that lives like that and they want opportunities. They want to get out and they see no open lanes.
Hillary offered a freeway for mining towns, offering training in green energy jobs. But she phrased it badly and it became a deleterious talking point. All the talk went to her closing mines, which are closing anyway, instead of the training.
Green energy is still an avenue the Kentucky people should be taking. It offers jobs and better health. If you want to hang onto mining jobs until the end, go ahead. Nobody is stopping that. But allow your kids to move into the future.
Green energy exists in every state and does offer a future.

Then check the other sources listed in the linked article. Unlike Trump, most politicians know better than to brazenly lie when they can easily be proven wrong and publicly humiliated. Here's one:

    https://www.forestunlimited.org/reso...st-statistics/

Many of the devastating fires are not even in forests, as was the case this year. Here is an article from the U.S. Forest Service (you know, a federal agency whose boss is Cheeto) and their mgmt work. Note the shortfall of federal resources mentioned.

agreed. I view the heritage of the plantation culture as the primary problem facing the south. Right now every parish is Louisiana has corruption investigations going on. The parish I live in just elected a new sheriff with a history of covering up deputies transgressions when he was the under sheriff. I figure the main industrial difference is the south lacked waterfalls except at Birmingham. Alexander Hamilton started our industrialization at the waterfalls at Patterson, NJ.
