Aren’t EC votes based on population? We wouldn’t gain population dividing our existing population. And from purely a political perspective Democrats could lose EC votes if one of the new states goes red

Gladly. I no longer consider California a State. I call it the SOTC now. I'll stay away and I won't worry about having to step in human feces, dodge wildfires you choose not to control, or worry about catching typhus, cholera, or bubonic plague.
