IOW, most of the inmates were white and almost every one put down "Christian" as his/her religion on the intake forms. We knew this because we would get a daily print-out of that day's inmate population, which included their age/race/religion/unit/status within the jail (i.e., inmate, weekender, inmate-worker, etc.) I got into a spat with my boss one time because she always honored the Muslims' request to be given non-pork meals, but she refused to honor the 2-3 Buddhists' requests for a vegan diet. She claimed that Buddhism wasn't a "real" religion. Yet she had us prepare vegan meals for the lone Seventh-Day Adventist inmate that once graced the place.

At any rate, I think the inmates were doing just what you stated: Putting down a religious preference just because Xtian was what they grew up with. As you might imagine, a lot of them "found Jesus" while in jail. lol

I think Xtians like RB, Stretch, PMP, etc. are strident, fearful, and angry because they know that they are a dying breed. So desperate that they embrace the most god-less venal POS POTUS we've ever been cursed with.
    Interesting story.
To be honest, I think it is genetic. Some people are just predisposed to Cultism. If RB were in the Middle East, he would be a fanatic supporter of Islam. (just my opinion)

(and the usual answer is God always existed, and has no creator)

But there is no proof that time itself always existed.

But, let us say for just a moment that God always existed. He existed for all time going back to infinity, before he created the Earth and the Heavens (in 6 days).

Just the creation thing is a bit absurd when you think about it. Before there was an Earth, there were no 'days.'

None the less, let us ponder for a moment this God entity always existing for all infinity backwards in time before creating Earth and humanity.

All alone. With nothingness all around. For all time going back. Wow. That musta been lonely.

What was he doing for all that time?

And what. Did he just get bored? Why, after all infinity before the creation, would this entity suddenly decide the thing to do was to create Earth and humanity? And then give it a ticking time clock? Oh, it's only going to last so long and then the bottom drops out. That sounds ridiculous.

What was the point of it all?

Like I said, there are just too many unanswered questions.

Believers have tried to answer my questions but never to any logical satisfaction.

Just a small part of why I am an atheist.

Now, I don't mean to put down religion.

You are free to believe in anything you like. It's all on faith. I have no way to disprove what you believe in any more than you can disprove what I do not believe in.

And hey. I have my own faith. What is faith anyway? It is the belief in something which cannot be proven.

I have faith that in the long run humans will get it right and endure. I have faith that most humans are basically good and wish others well. We humans care for one another and for all of humanity. That's my faith. I can't prove it, but I believe it anyway. Out of my faith comes my logic that we should treat one another with respect. Nobody told me this stuff. I realize it's the kind of thing you have to figure out for yourself. And I feel much better about that than listening to somebody else tell me how to think.
It's kind of hard to be respectful of your beliefs when you're so disrespectful of what others choose to believe here. Yet, we are....
In the above post you say everyone is free to believe what they like...yet the majority of your posts say otherwise....Hmmm...am i missing something?

The ones that pertain to how to treat God are meaningful only to those who are believers, but they are the minority. More of them pertain to how to treat other people, and all of those make a sensible guide for interaction in society.

Most of the Ten are actually very smart.
Name the Ten Commandments that make for a sensible guide for interaction.

It's wrong for you to covet the things the rest of us earned by believing the government should take from us so it can give to you.

You think I'd be a jihadist?

Nah. I wouldn't shoot anyone unless they were a threat to myself, my family or my property. Same thing as here in the US.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

    even for atheists, these.....
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy (you need a rest now and then)
Honor thy father and thy mother
    Thou shalt not murder
    Thou shalt not commit adultery
    Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
    Thou shalt not covet

and I would certainly expect you to like the one about not worshipping graven images......

I don't care if you respect my beliefs or not as long as you don't try to make it about me. The way I see it, simply allowing other people to believe whatever they want is being respectful enough as far as that is concerned.

Stating why you believe differently is not showing disrespect. It's just people listening to one another explain why they believe the things they do. Gives others a different perspective to compare to their own belief system. Most people are pretty well settled in their beliefs so changing anybody's mind about something is rare, but it does occur. I have certainly adjusted my views after hearing why others believe differently. The talking about stuff is the good thing. Taking some time to examine a subject, search aspects of it, read up a little, learn some more, it all helps refine views. That's why I am not so much into the interpersonal games so common here. If you've noticed, I just mainly want to focus on the actual subject at hand.

I probably spend just as much time researching the topics I discuss here at JPP as I spend actively reading or making posts.

A casual dismissing is inappropriate there.

Remember: Harry Potter is extremely popular.
