House, Senate members drum up support for compensating college athletes

oct 15 2019 WASHINGTON -- Federal lawmakers returned to Capitol Hill this week with interest piqued in finding new ways to compensate college athletes.

U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., spent Wednesday drumming up support for a proposed bill that could make it possible for all U.S. college athletes to accept endorsement money as early as January 2021.

Walker introduced a bill in March that would change federal tax code to prohibit the NCAA and its member schools from requiring college athletes to sign away the rights to their own name, image and likeness in order to play college sports. The bill would have the same effect on a national scale as a first-of-its-kind state law passed in California two weeks ago.

I think it's indefensible how college athletes are exploited. They get nothing while the coach gets 8 million a year. But it's not a federal matter.

Citation??? HAHAHA. Are you so dumb you can't find the 10A on the internet???? It says any power not granted to the federal govt nor denied to the states is retained by the states or the people. Regulating the payment of college athletes is NOT one of the listed powers of congress so they don't have it. The states do.

As you know the actual application of the Amendment has been the center of dispute for two hundred years, states rights/federal power, but I'd say in this case, the States would be looking to the Federal Gov't for national guidelines, otherwise, one State school could have different rules than others leading to disparity

It is going alter college athletics and pretty much end the NCAA as it exists today. Some of those State schools without a major marketing area nearby are going to be surprised, is the star recruit looking to market himself going to be satisfied pitching used cars in Tuscaloosa or consumer products in say Los Angelus?

As you know the actual application of the Amendment has been the center of dispute for two hundred years, states rights/federal power, but I'd say in this case, the States would be looking to the Federal Gov't for national guidelines, otherwise, one State school could have different rules than others leading to disparity

Disparity?? What's wrong with that.? So what if states have different laws?. Each one of the 50 states is supposed to be a sovereign country. Like the states that make up the EU.
