Default US has come to a substantial phase one deal with China

The U.S. has come to a “very substantial phase one deal” with China in the high-stakes trade negotiations between the two economic superpowers, President Donald Trump said Friday.

“Phase two will start almost immediately” after the first phase is signed, Trump said in the Oval Office alongside Chinese Vice Premier Liu He.

Both sides in the long-running talks, which resumed at the top level this week, have signaled optimism about coming to an agreement of some sort in the near future.

The current incarnation of the deal will address intellectual property and financial services concerns, along with purchases of about $40 to $50 billion worth of agricultural products by China.

President Trump, speaking at the White House, said: “We’ve come to a very substantial phase one deal”...adding it will take three to five weeks to get written. The deal includes intellectual property, financial services and $40-$50 billion related to agriculture products. It is unclear what the U.S will give up in return and a comprehensive trade deal will have two or three phases.

The U.S. will not be raising tariffs on the Chinese next week to the 30 percent level as part of this agreement.

U.S. stocks spiked to the highs of the session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by nearly 500 points, before pulling back slightly at the close.

Now let me ask you, is this going to be another North Korea where Trump appeases the autocrats, proclaims it is a great deal, 'biggest deal in history," but in the end does nothing to address the intial issues?

You mean the issues Trump was left to address as ‘the chosen one’ amongst his predecessors lol?

The stock market seems to like it and if it fails in the end, we’re no worse off than we were under Clinton-Bush-Obama.

So what’s there to not like about it?

that's YUGE ( actuallt 40-$50 but we are around $16b now..

The Intellectual Property Rights seems nailed down -and the big Currency manipulation as well.

I'm not sure of the enforcement mechanism -POTUS said something like "substantial discussion mechanism"
-which means no automatic triggers, but backed up by triggers if disputes aren't resolved.

4 weeks to ink it and then Congress must pass it

Oh he didn't address it, rather attempted to use it as a photo op, but then he got played by the Little Rocket Man, and are you going to use the Stock Market as a barometer if next week or some where done the road it tanks? I think not

There is nothing to think anything about, zero details were released, it is just another one of those we agree to agree type deals that Trump frames as "the greatest in history"

It is nothing but an outline, no details, just a promise to agree, another Trump photo op, he needs with the week he has had

"The principles of the deal, which Trump said would be written over the next three weeks, cover financial services, agriculture and some intellectual property issues. But the deal must still be written and signed by both parties, and it steered clear of broader issues Trump hoped to address when he embarked on the trade war last year, including broader intellectual property issues, forced technology transfer and massive Chinese industrial subsidies."
    https://thehill.com/policy/finance/4...eal-with-china

"President Donald Trump said the U.S. and China have reached what he called a substantial “phase one“ deal in which Beijing agreed to limited measures to improve trade ties between the countries. The tentative agreement, however, falls short of a broader deal addressing the most significant U.S. concerns over China’s state-run economy that sparked the trade fight."

Derek Scissors, a China expert at the American Enterprise Institute who sometimes advises the White House, said U.S. businesses aren’t gaining many concessions from Beijing.

“What the U.S. is getting is purchases and several elements of nonsense,” Scissors said before the announcement. “Today seems to be another 'China-is-Great' day, but future talks face a higher risk."

If it fails you still have thousands of farmers and businesses going bankruptcy. Trump will concede everything to pretend he has a deal

That's a whole different topic, if TPP had been accomplished the same thing Trump is after, well, what he says he is after, could have been accomplished without the effects of trade wars, guess Trump learned "trade wars are easy to win"

Exactly, Trump makes his announcement, "best, biggest, tremendous, etc.," photo op, Fox celebrates it, and they buy it regardless of the reality
