Climate scientists say Greta Thunberg's efforts are building real momentum
"She is getting people to listen, which we have failed to do," one climatologist said.
Environmental activist Greta Thunberg’s searing address at the United Nations earlier this week earned enthusiastic praise from climate researchers, with many saying that the 16-year-old has found ways to raise awareness of climate science, galvanize support and resonate with people in ways that they have struggled to for decades.
“Speaking as a climate change scientist who has been working on this issue for 20 years and saying the same thing for 20 years, she is getting people to listen, which we have failed to do,” said Saleemul Huq, director of the International Centre for Climate Change & Development in Bangladesh.
“I thought it was the most powerful speech I’ve ever seen.”
Sally Benson, co-director of the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, applauded Thunberg’s emotional remarks and her efforts to mobilize young people to demand action on climate change.
“She has been a catalytic leader,” Benson said. “We’re seeing more grassroots action, and she’s creating a movement where young people are pushing communities, cities, states and corporations and saying, ‘we’re not going to wait.’”

A new United Nations report that sounds the alarm about the planet's failing health will be released in Monaco later this week. Details have begun to emerge about the effects of global warming on the world's oceans and frozen regions.
The report is expected to reveal that the ice in the Arctic and Antarctic is melting much more quickly than previously thought. It's also expected to say warming is so far advanced that tipping points have been crossed and some of the more severe consequences can no longer be avoided, reports CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips.
Among the cited consequences are rising sea levels that could displace hundreds of millions of people from coastal areas, increased numbers of destructive storms, devastated fish stocks and even reduced supplies of drinking water.
The report is the gloomiest prediction yet by the U.N.'s climate panel. It predicts that if greenhouse gasses are not significantly reduced, the consequences will get even worse.

I'm sure that our Best Christian Poster Ever bimbo, our racist fake teacher, and our motley assortment of climate denying twits will be along shortly to point out how this can't possibly be true because reasons, Greta's an abused and exploited child who should be in church and/or school, and hey look! It snowed in the Rockies! See! There's no climate change!

I believe the Ten Commandments prohibition against lying applies whether words leave one's mouth, or are typed on a keyboard.
The lower life forms who claim Greta is an abused child cunningly manipulated by Kenyan-Marxist puppet masters are fully aware they are willfully lying.
I have yet to hear a plausible explanation from any rightwinger why it is necessary to lie on a message board, to people they have never met, and about a teenager from Sweden they know virtually nothing about.
If I chose to be a Climate Denier, I could easily mount a technically plausible argument without having to stoop to lying, character defamation, and libel.
Does lying come to some posters that easily??

She spanked the hell out of the right wing climate change deniers and the amount of threads they started on this forum alone shows how stunningly effective she is and is going to be in the future. Greta will likely get a Nobel Prize which will really burn their collective butts...especially Trump's huge one. Poetic justice at its best.

It does, but there's apparently a catch: It's okay to lie if it's for Jesus. And everyone knows that Jesus approves of adults lying about a kid whose POV isn't the same as theirs because this will make Him come back quicker, or something.
Of course they do, but they try to cloak it in faux concern for her obvious suffering. The lower life forms who claim Greta is an abused child cunningly manipulated by Kenyan-Marxist puppet masters are fully aware they are willfully lying.
They're saving the nation from a 16-yo kid from another country. If she gets her way, we'll have to do something about climate change. And whatever that something is, you just KNOW it will be very bad for the 1%. I mean, for America. Did I say 1%? Oops.I have yet to hear a plausible explanation from any rightwinger why it is necessary to lie on a message board, to people they have never met, and about a teenager from Sweden they know virtually nothing about.
Sure does. Practice makes perfect! If I chose to be a Climate Denier, I could easily mount a technically plausible argument without having to stoop to lying, character defamation, and libel.

Young adults and teenagers have always been agents for change, as far as I can tell.
Young adults stopped the Vietnam War, young adults ended Jim Crow in the south, and I am pretty sure it was young adults who played the instrumental role in women's suffrage, the environmental movements of the 1970s, and gay civil rights.
Why young climate activists have captured the world’s attention
As the movement prepares for a massive global protest, researchers break down why its message is gaining ground.
Young people have been talking about climate change for decades. But the latest generation of protestors is louder and more coordinated than its predecessors, says Dana Fisher, a sociologist at the University of Maryland in College Park who studies activism. The movement’s visibility on social media and in the press has created a feedback loop. “Young people are getting so much attention that it draws more young people into the movement,” she says.
From Jakarta to New York City, children and teenagers are walking out of class and marching in the streets to demand action on climate change. And the world is taking notice. Communications experts say these young climate activists are using their moral authority as children, and their social-media savvy, to surf a rising tide of adult concern.
Jamie Margolin founded the protest group Zero Hour in Seattle, Washington, in 2017, when she was just 15. Half a world away, 15-year-old Greta Thunberg started skipping school in 2018 to strike for climate action outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm. The movement quickly went global. An estimated 1.6 million kids in 125 countries hit the streets during a protest in mid-March. And a youth-led demonstration planned worldwide for 20 September could be the largest climate protest ever.

^^ As per usual, the Climate Denial Cabal cannot produce a body of reputable peer reviewed scientific literature, published over the past three decades, that either supports their relentless Denial, nor refutes the worldwide scientific consensus on climate in any credible way.
Absent being able to make a plausible and supportable scientific argument, they are reduced to howling about how a Swedish teenage girl is mentally ill and being used as an unwitting pawn by nefarious climate scientists intent on hogging more grant money.

I maintain that it is unequivocal that the Vietnam War protests played an instrumental role in turning public opinion against that war, and forcing politicians to scale back, and ultimately abandon the effort to involve ourselves in what amounted to a civil war in southeast Asia.
And I remain convinced that young adults will be catalysts in mobilizing world opinion to address climate change, even in the face of opposition from the Old White Men who constitute the last dead enders leading the Climate Denial Cabal.
