Default United States was among the last nations in the Americas to abolish slavery

    How pitiful and shameful.

Americans like to think of ourselves as freedom-loving, progressive, and more “evolved” than other countries, particularly those in the “third world” (what a loaded term that is), but this map shows differently.

"There are tens of millions of people trapped in various forms of slavery throughout the world today. Researchers estimate that 40 million are enslaved worldwide, generating $150 billion each year in illicit profits for traffickers."
    https://www.freetheslaves.net/our-mo...slavery-today/

"New slavery has two chief characteristics—it’s cheap and it’s disposable. Slaves today are cheaper than ever. In 1850, an average slave in the American South cost the equivalent of $40,000 in today’s money. Today a slave costs about $90 on average worldwide. (Source: Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy. See all Free the Slaves books.)"

"Slavery flows into our homes, offices, and schools through many of the products we buy. Slaves harvest cocoa in West Africa, and it ends up in our chocolate. Slaves make charcoal in Brazil, which is used to run smelters that make steel for our cars. Many food products and raw materials are tainted by slavery—such as tomatoes, tuna, shrimp, cotton, diamonds, iron, sugar, and gold."

"There was a time when slavery was legal, and people considered it morally acceptable and economically essential. The battle to build a global consensus that slavery is unjust and unneeded has been won. Now we need to finish the job by freeing those still trapped in bondage."

And the only nation to kill hundreds of thousands of its citizens and destroy 40% of its economy to do it.

"1833 - Britain passes Abolition of Slavery Act, ordering gradual abolition of slavery in all British colonies. Plantation owners in the West Indies receive 20 million pounds in compensation"
    from Cinnabar's link.

'Compensation'. That may have been a better alternative.

I'm not sure the slave-owners would have accepted that without a fight. It was a crucial part of their economy.

Slavery in the British Empire was comparatively less important by 1833.

It was pretty important in the West Indies.
"In the Caribbean, Great Britain colonised the islands of St. Kitts and Barbados in 1623 and 1627 respectively, and later, Jamaica in 1655. These and other Caribbean colonies became the center of wealth and the focus of the slave trade for the growing British Empire.[1]"

According to white people in the South, the decision to maintain slavery was regrettable and unfortunate. But sadly white people had no choice but to enslave black people, because only black people were adapted to manual labor in the subtropical heat of the south (while white men undoubtedly sat on the shaded veranda sipping lemonade). You could almost say southern whites were forced to enslave blacks, by unfortunate happenchance.

    Mississippi Statement of Secession, 1861

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth.

These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun.

These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

His point, as always, is to bash America. Race hustlers hate America almost as much as they do Republicans.

    Thats the crux.
They covered the depreciation of the fixed assets which erased the cost.
So simple but Lincoln wanted blood.

The point is that it had to come down to a war within a country to abolish slavery. A country that considered itself superior to other countries certainly didn't walk the walk. Yeah...it was exceptional alright.
