Default Hopefully this helps Japan: If Japan dumps 1 million tonnes of radioactive water

...from Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean then it looks like the people of Japan might not ever get to fish for healthy food again.

Having seen this someone stated to me

"The largest amount of radiation released is Iodine-131. It's 1/2 life is 8 days. It decays very rapidly."

    So I responded

"Well then let it decay rapidly before dumping it. As for the rest and more harmful, can it be separated?"

    So hopefully this helps Japan.

Iodine occurs naturally in sea water, did you know that? As far as I can ascertain the main constituent is tritium, which poses little danger to humans.

It can be separated but the process is cost-prohibitive.

There is a proposal to inject it deep underground. I would like to hear more about that idea.

There is 707.5 million km3 of water in the Pacific or 94277939944E+17 tonnes. In other words, a million tonnes is fuck all.

Comparison by volume may seem like fuck all but what concerns me and perhaps many are the dangerous components of nuclear waste being dumped hence my concern over separation yet according to Poli, looks like no one wants to put that on the table...

don't let this pass you by cause once it's done (a course of action taken), it's done.
