Default 'Universal Time'. Exact same 'clock' used for Planet.

    'Universal Time'.
I just heard about this proposal on a Morning Talk Show. Every one on the Planet uses the exact same 'time' as everyone else. If it is 1400 in London, it's 1400 in New York, Tokyo, and Moscow. I was a little skeptical at first, but after listening to these two old guys, I think it has merit.
There would be no more 'setting your watch' up or back depending on what Time Zone you were in. It would be completely detached from the usual thinking that 7am is in the morning and 9pm is in the evening. It would be a '24 hour clock', no more 'two 6 o'clocks', just a 100 to 2400 (or 000 to 2400) clock.

    Any thoughts?

When I am at work, we operate on GMT, which we call zulu time. It is 7-8 hours ahead of Pacific time, depending on whether we are effing around with gaylight savings.

Well, you have first hand experience. (I don't think there is any 'Daylight Savings Time' involved)
So? Everybody working off GMT is a good idea? Everybody accepts a '24 hour clock' is a good idea?

So the whole world would celebrate New Year's Eve at exactly the same time?

    It's a terrible idea.

    How so?

With UTC, some people will be celebrating NYE at 3pm and others at 3am.

This is what scientists use as well... only it's called Universal Time. Same thing. So if Sci Guy A makes an observation of an event at 0234 UT, every other sci person around the world knows exactly when that was compared to his/her own local time. If you like night sky observation it's a really handy tool to when when to look for something.

If we are going to launch an attack on something at 0234Z, everyone knows when it's going down.

What is the difference between GMT and UTC?

    • GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time and UTC for Coordinated Universal Time.

    • Greenwich Mean Time is based on astronomical observations.

    • Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is an international time scale recommended by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) as the legal basis for time. It is a method of measuring time using atomic clocks.

    • The time difference between UTC and GMT lies in fractions of a second. Therefore, for common purposes, both the times are considered the same. But, the time difference is important for scientific purposes.

    • GMT is adopted in their legislations as in countries such as United Kingdom, Belgium, Republic of Ireland and Canada.

    • UTC is the time standard used for several Internet and World Wide Web standards.

    • It can be said that the UTC is Internet based time standard whereas GMT is country based time standard.

That makes no sense whatsoever for obvious reasons. Times purpose in history has been meant to mark the cycles of the sun. What dumbass brought this up on TV?

hahahaha (You're killing me here, Jade)

You would have to detach yourself from the traditional way of looking at the 'time of day'. You would have to accept 'time of day' as being a global system to unify the Planet into using a single 'clock'.

If changing your watch is do vexing, get a smartwatch.
If you have friends or family elsewhere you still have to consider the time difference to avoid catching them at an inconvenient time.

    What a stupid idea.

As it is now, everything wherever you go happens more or less at the same time. Stores open at 9am, supper is at 6pm, etc. But, with universal time, wherever you travel, you'd have to mentally convert everything from the universal time. If you land in California or New York, from Asia or Europe, when do the stores open and when is supper, if it's 1200 around the globe?
