Default Will Britain intervene on behalf of Hong Kong?

Dame Anson Chan who was Chief Secretary before and after the handover hopes so.
Britain was the co-signer. They need to help ensure that the Treaty is followed and
delivers on the promises at least until 2047. She feels they have the legal and moral
responsibility to do so. She's not a fan of Lam who was appointed by Beijing.

Abortion rights dogma can obscure human reason & harden the human heart so much that the same person who feels
empathy for animal suffering can lack compassion for unborn children who experience lethal violence and excruciating
    pain in abortion.

Unborn animals are protected in their nesting places, humans are not. To abort something is to end something
which has begun. To abort life is to end it.

This could get bad quickly. I would be surprised if Bejing keeps the hands off approach much longer. Britain can try diplomacy with China to honor the treaty. If that fails they would need help.

In just 15 minutes this thorough explanation of how and why Hong Kong got to this point
and the role that China has played in "beginning" its takeover a bit early to say the least.
Nice shot of the world's longest sea bridge as well. Immediately after the handover most
Hong Kongers considered themselves Chinese. That soon changed and they preferred
to be recognized as Hong Kongers. China infiltrated their school systems as well by forcing
school books to be written in Mandarin rather than Cantonese. Too many topics covered here
that it's simpler to listen and watch. Enjoy.

Finally found something. It's a bit old though...7/4/19
Seems both Jeremy Hunt and Theresa May have actually had something to say on the issue.

Britain and China continue to row over Hong Kong as Jeremy Hunt warns Beijing not to ‘repress’ protests

Beijing accuses British foreign secretary and rival Boris Johnson of making ‘irresponsible’ comments and questions whether it is a coordinated attack
Hunt repeats warning to China to respect handover agreement and insists Britain will not ‘gulp and move on’ if there is a heavy-handed crackdown

Britain and China continued to trade barbs over Hong Kong on Thursday with Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt warning Beijing not to respond with “repression”.

Meanwhile, the Chinese foreign ministry accused both Hunt and Boris Johnson, his rival for the leadership of the ruling Conservative Party, of making “irresponsible” remarks and questioning whether they had coordinated their attacks.

The dispute escalated on Wednesday when Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese ambassador, was summoned to the Foreign Office in London over his “unacceptable and inaccurate” remarks in which he accused the British of supporting violent protests and interfering in internal matters.

Hunt insisted on Thursday that he did not support violent protests but warned that not supporting the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, under which Hong Kong was returned to Chinese rule, would have serious consequences for both sides.

He told BBC radio that there was no reason why China and Britain could not maintain a good relationship, but warned the Chinese authorities not to respond "by repression".

G7 summit: Boris Johnson urged to stand by Hong Kong
BORIS Johnson must use this week's G7 summit to condemn China's abuse of democracy and human rights in Hong Kong, experts said last night.
    By Marco Giannangeli
    PUBLISHED: 17:06, Sun, Aug 18, 2019 | UPDATED: 22:41, Sun, Aug 18, 2019

The pleas come as a million prodemocracy protesters took to the streets for the 11th week in a row to urge Hong Kong's chief executive to listen to their demands. All police leave in the region was cancelled, while Chinese troop carriers remained amassed at the border. The Prime Minister, whose brother Max is a businessman in Hong Kong, has been coming under mounting pressure to send a clear signal to the international community condemning China's breaches of a legally binding agreement which guaranteed that Hong Kong would retain "a high degree of autonomy, except in foreign and defence affairs" for 50 years.

As a stakeholder to the 1984 Joint Agreement, Britain can still play a key role in galvanising international condemnation.

And some experts warned that nations such as the US will not act without that call.

Jeremy Lefroy MP, a member of the Commons human rights committee, said: "The PM is going to G7 next week and he needs to make Hong Kong a top priority. Getting a joint declaration from the G7 is his perfect opportunity to put down his marker in a measured way to state the facts as they are.

"He can bind in Germany and France, as well as the US, Italy, Canada and Japan. He can come out with pretty strong statements."

He added: "We can no longer pussyfoot around how this will impact trade - we've gone beyond that now. With Brexit, we've already decided that trade relationships are secondary to matters of national sovereignty and we must be consistent."

His view was backed by Evan Fowler, founder of the Hong Kong Free Press, who said: "I can confirm that unfortunately the impression of Britain in Hong Kong is very poor. They know that the only country in the world with enough clout to even have a proper dialogue with China is the US."

He said one move would be for US President Donald Trump to revoke the Hong Kong Policy Act, which currently protects the island from his trade war with Beijing. He added: "When it comes to trade policy, most Hongkongers - whatever they think of him as a person - acknowledge that he's finally calling China out.

"But Britain holds the key. It is an equal signatory to the joint declaration. "My American contacts tell me repeatedly that the US's hands are tied by what the UK does. Boris Johnson must realise that he is in a position to provide the framework that the international community can take."

The latest turmoil was sparked by a bid by Beijing to change the island's extradition laws, allowing the prosecution of Hong Kong suspects on the mainland where the justice system is controlled by the Communist Party.

But Hongkongers have actually had their rights eroded for almost 20 years, said Fowler.

I don't know if Beijing can force anything. Aside it being a travesty, I can't imagine that
they want anything at all to look remotely like Tienanmen Square. I'm looking forward to
the G7 and hopefully hearing some harsh comments...beginning with U.K. They are the
ones who have to start the ball rolling which will give the green light for other countries
    to follow suit.
