That is very general, some of course do straight out lie & twist...
It was maybe 15 years ago I read a story by Robert Fisk, himself a very well respected British reporter..
He was talking about "anonymous sources", "not authorized to speak", "people privy to insiders" etc etc etc
He was pissed, sick of it as the reporting agent carried it along as if it was fact & no attempts made to verify the veracity of these "tales", which sadly many of them were turning out to be.
So I was always wary, but after reading his article I take it all w/ a grain of salt & when possible independently verify + there is a lot of commentary sold as something else..
A good trump example was today about having "second thoughts"..
It was reported & I read posts about trump having second thoughts & that meant blah blah blah..
Stretch put an end to that mystery by posting a clip where you can clearly see the comment in context so it turns out it was merely wishful thinking by lots of ppl.
All sides do it, some are worse than others......
They are in business, making money, they will do what is in their best interest, that is their agenda...
