I have seen that 20% figure quoted many times, however it's not true. The Russian Taiga boreal forests produce more but rarely get a mention. That's not to say South American rainforests are not important, there are extremely important, not least for the wealth of flora and fauna.

They also sequester a lot more carbon than terrestrial plants, .... and studies say their population is half what it was in the 1950's. Hmmm.
