NEW YORK — After five years of investigations and protests, New York City's police commissioner on Monday fired an officer involved in the 2014 chokehold death of an unarmed black man whose dying cries of "I can't breathe" fueled a national debate over race and police use of force.
Police Commissioner James O'Neill's announced at a midday news conference that he had fired Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who is white, based on a recent recommendation of a department disciplinary judge. He said it was clear that Pantaleo "can no longer effectively serve as a New York City police officer."
"None of us can take back our decisions," O'Neill said, "especially when they lead to the death of another human being."
O'Neill has been deliberating on whether to accept a disciplinary judge's recommendation to fire Officer Daniel Pantaleo for using a banned chokehold on Eric Garner.
The recordings led to years of protests and calls by black activists and liberal politicians for Pantaleo to lose his job. City officials had long insisted, though, they couldn't take action until criminal investigations were complete.
A state grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo in 2014. Federal authorities, however, kept a civil rights investigation open for five years before announcing last month they wouldn't bring charges.
Pantaleo's lawyer has insisted the officer used a reasonable amount of force and didn't mean to hurt Garner.
New York City's mayor has declined to say whether he believes Garner should lose his job but has been promising "justice" to the slain man's family.
Garner's death came at a time of a growing public outcry over police killings of unarmed black men that sparked the national Black Lives Matter movement.
Just weeks later, protests erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, over the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. And later in 2014, a man angry about the Garner and Brown cases shot two New York City police officers to death in their cruiser in retribution."

It's like trying to fire a bad teacher. Damn near impossible to fire a public union employee no matter how poorly they perform.

A sad commentary on we, as a people, and our viewpoint of our freedom can be summed up like this. We have liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, yet those very people look at Constitutionalists as radical and extreme.................so those liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans must believe that the constitution is radical and extreme.
The subhuman piece of shit Eric Garner, who was already half dead because of how he took care of himself, has been arrested over 30 times. It's too bad Garner wasn't appropralty executed on a rope for his life of crime, before an innocent white man dragged down trying to arrest Garner. A settlement with the city has made the Garner family millionaires. If there were any justice, the city would sue the animal's estate for justice costs associated with his 30+ arrests.

Your last two comments aren't relevant to the point I was making. In the private sector it is far easier to get rid of a poor performing employee. But when it comes to the government it can be extremely difficult. If we want the government to work and be efficient it shouldn't be a place where poor performers can hide and be protected. Yet that's what we have.
Pantaleo was sacrificed to appease the black savages.

I think the negroes and their lib allies are out to destroy civilization. Why would anyone want to be a cop these days? As fewer people want to be cops, police departments will have to be less picky, and hire less qualified people. This officer used necessary force.
"Make America a 3rd-world nation!" should be the Democrat motto.

Hello cawacko,
Well one thing is for sure. Workers definitely get the benefit of the doubt. By having a system which makes it so difficult to frivolously fire somebody, it is equally difficult for a manager with an agenda to create their own little kingdom. Everybody knows they have to work with the others because probably nobody is going anywhere. It also makes sure that nobody loses their job unless they really mess up bad. Most workers can earn more money doing the same job outside the government, so the draw to work for the government is the benefits and job security are better. The federal government is the number one US employer with over 2 million workers. I remain unconvinced the government is inefficient at everything it does. I'm sure there are some areas which could stand improvement, but the government accomplishes a lot and we are better for it.
