Default Now Viet Nam has a bone to pick with China

South China Sea alert: Fears of war surge as Vietnam confronts Beijing over ‘violations’
VIETNAM has made a desperate plea to Beijing to remove its vessels from a disputed region within the South China Sea.
    By Bill McLoughlin
    PUBLISHED: 03:06, Sun, Aug 18, 2019 | UPDATED: 03:23, Sun, Aug 18, 2019

Like many countries in the region, Vietnam has clashed with China over certain areas which Beijing considers within its nine-dash line policy. The nine-dash line policy is the demarcation line marked out by Beijing and includes hotly contested island groups such as the Spratly and Paracels. Recently, Vietnam confirmed that a Chinese survey vessel had re-entered its territorial waters, thus inflaming tensions once again.

Following the return of the Chinese vessel, Vietnam has pleaded with China to leave the Vanguard bank.

In a statement, Le Thi Thu Hang, a spokeswoman for the country foreign ministry said on Friday: “Vietnam has made contact with China to protest its repeated violations and demanded that China withdraw the vessel group from Vietnamese waters.”

Adding to the tense relations, on Friday a Chinese fishing ban that had been in place since May, was lifted.

As a result of that, fleets of fishing vessels from China are expected to enter areas that neighbouring countries may consider as there own.

Experts have already stated that lifting the ban could increase the friction between Beijing and Hanoi.

With tensions in the region threatening to spill into conflict, the US has stepped up patrols in the sea.

In light of that, Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi stated that any non-regional country should leave.

Mr Wang added: “We think non-regional countries should not deliberately amplify such differences or disputes.

“Non-regional countries should also not make use of these differences to sow distrust between China and ASEAN countries.”

Fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member, the Philippines has also expressed its fear over the presence of Chinese ships.

Presidential spokesman, Salvador Panelo said: “We express concern with that kind of incident because they China keep on saying that we’re friends.

“I don’t think that this is an act of friendship.”

And not to be left out, the U.S. (and Australia) has its own problems with China.

    *****************

South China Sea: Beijing on collision course with US after investing $300m in Cambodia
CHINA’s agreement to invest almost $300million in Cambodia, a deal which will give it an important military foothold in the region and access the strategically important Gulf of Thailand, has put it on a collision course with the United States and Australia.
    By Ciaran McGrath
    PUBLISHED: 16:58, Thu, Aug 15, 2019 | UPDATED: 22:54, Thu, Aug 15, 2019

Beijing’s move was swiftly followed by an announcement by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison that his country would be investing £280 million in efforts aiming at fighting climate change and “disaster resilience in the Pacific”. Analysts have suggested the decision was the result of pressure by Washington to counter Chinese influence in the South China Sea, where Beijing has built numerous military installations in recent years.

The agreement between China and Cambodia will see the Beijing invest $290million to expand its presence in the south-east Asian country.

Under the terms of the deal, China will get access to a Cambodian naval base, plus the rights to invest in a base located in the Gulf.

Documents obtained by the United States suggested China would be able to use the base for 30 years, and would be able to deploy “military personnel, store weapons, and berth warships”.

The move is certain to trigger alarm bells in Washington, where concern over Chinese influence in the South China Sea has been mounting for some time.

The US are concerned by China’s growing influence as it pumps money into overseas projects via its ‘One Belt, One Road’ policy.

Despite the existence of the documents, Cambodian prime minister, Hun Sen, has vehemently denied the reality of the deal.

China's One Belt, One Road initiative (Image: GETTY)

He said last month: “This is the worst ever false news against Cambodia.

“No such thing could happen because hosting foreign military bases is against the Cambodian constitution.”

Over the past two years, China has invested more than $400 million for infrastructure and growth in Cambodia.

Cambodia is one of the signatories of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Australian junior minister Andrew Hastie irked Beijing yesterday after comparing China’s increased activity to Nazi Germany prior to World War 2.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Mr Hastie suggested Australia was in a similar situation to France in World War 2, saying his country had failed “to see how mobile our authoritarian neighbour” China had become.

A map of the South China Sea (Image: Daily Express)

Liberal MP Andrew Sharma backed Mr Hastie, saying: He added: “In World War 2, we failed to realise early enough that German ambitions could not be accommodated.

“The point is, rising powers inevitably cause convulsions within the international system, and China’s rise is no different.

“If the rising power is revisionist in nature, and cannot be accommodated within the existing order - because it fundamentally does not accept the legitimacy of that order — then the future becomes much tougher.

“The ideological direction and ambition of China has become far more pronounced. Our strategy and thinking needs to reflect this shift.”

China knows that trump is an impotent coward. They are basically free to do whatever they please in the region, as they should.

I don't have the answer, but Trump & Morrison are close...I bet they're talking.
All I can say is that it's sure going to be an interesting G7 this year! (8/24 > 8/26)
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

I was in Saigon back in 2011 when I witnessed a massive demo against China regarding the Spratly Islands. I have commented on this for years and warned that it's a major bone of contention for the Vietnamese. I am glad to see that people are finally beginning to wake up.

Overlooked in the uproar over China’s announcement, on Nov. 23, 2013, of an East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) is the fact that Beijing’s exertion of sovereignty over the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku islands, did not have to overlap with about 3,000 square kilometers of South Korea’s own ADIZ. The overlap encompasses South Korea’s Ieodo (Suyan) Rock, grazing the Western fringe of Jeju-do’s airspace in the process.

The overlap however is noted in Seoul.

The Hankyoreh began its report by noting the inclusion of Ieodo in the ADIZ, while South Korea’s defense minister Kim Min-seok said Korean aircraft would continue to fly in the area covered by the ADIZ without informing China.

Read the whole article. I have to wonder if the bad blood between China and Japan will reappear.
China hates Japan's guts. That was a rough time back when Japan occupied Shanghai and other cities.
