Bush created/enabled ISIS. Obama and his intel advisers definitely underestimated them. Given their tactics of using entire villages as human shields, it took a bit of time for Obama et. al to come up with a plan to eradicate them from Iraq.

It was a challenge, but that was his forte.

The alternatives are an eternal presence in Afghanistan or ignoring them—which is what Obama did and we know how that ends up.

    Neither is acceptable.
LMAO. He ignored them to death. Mosul was surrounded, and all supplies were cut off to ISIS when trump took office. They were allowing villagers out. trump mopped up and took credit for everything.

I’m skeptical of the Pentagon criticism in the OP: in one sense, the Pentagon functions as a self-interested corporation within the government that likes to keep ‘business up’. Who knows how many defense contractors have high ranking Pentagon people on speed dial. How many of them start making noise when Trump [or any future president] tries to wind things down in Afghanistan?

The whole business needs a hard look from a determined president that is willing to change the culture at the top.
Agree. However, it keeps going back to Pandora's Box. There will never be an answer to this problem. They have no problem recruiting new assets. Sure...they grew rapidly in the beginning because they were stealing Iraqi oil and using it to fund their operations. Further, cowardly Iraqi soldiers provided arms when they joined ISIS.

That's not going on right now, thanks to Obama. But...they'll always have the ability to create small terrorist attacks until they grow their cache of weapons again.

The best answer is to not invade Iraq at all.

If only we had a time machine.

such horseshit ignorance. post a map dotard. (Jan 2017)

Obama didn't do shit. He provided air cover -if he had stafed the bastards as they convoyed into Iraq
they wouldn't have gotten the heavy weapons Iraqi soldiers abandoned when confronting ISIS

more horseshit. Obama did not do any planning for the land forces.
The Iraqi army is autonomous and worked in tandem with the Shi'a militias called to arms.

The Iranians certainly did not coordinate with Obama. On top of that Obama require much too much decision making for airstrikes to come thru the White House, instead of the battlefield autonomy directed by Trump

Which is all that Trump ever does.

RINO is the term for that rare Republican who puts country above party.

Right wing = lie, lie, and lie some more.

The definition of "racist" as "anyone who is white" is itself racist.

You could have mentioned a Kurdish state, but you didn't because you are ignorant of middle east affairs.

ISIS isn't "emboldened" it a fractured insurgency, just like it was before it was ISIS ( it was AQI)
you are indeed a blithering idiot

Seems Trump's "America First" policy, whatever that hell that is besides a cliche for the gym rallies, is imploding all over the world. We've lost strong relationships with traditional allies, watched the Far East fragment, allowed China to extend spheres of influence worldwide, authoritarian leaders to pretty much do what they want unchecked, and as we've seen here, even managed to screw up apparent success

But as long as Trump keeps insulting and demonizing the people and ideas the Trumpkins are afraid of, it's a "greater America," regardless of the realities
I didn't realize Trump was president in 2011.
