Guess you never studied Latin or the stem the 'niger' comes from, or the variants that can still be found around the Mediterranean today. It is not a racist word in and of itself any more than 'human' is.
Actually I studied both Latin and Spanish and I know what the Spanish word for black is. I'm saying that using the N-word as a racist slur dates to the 18th century.

I'm curious about why people living on a continent that's 80% black would call someone the N-word. Our country is something like 75% white yet we don't refer to each other as "whitey."

Then why didn't you acknowledge that it wasn't used as a slur until the 18th century? You're focusing on the root of the word and not the context in which it became offensive.

It began as shorthand for African slaves, then post-Civil War it became a pejorative. It's part of a lexicon of ugly words to describe those who were other -- spics, greasers, wops, coons, wetbacks, chinks, kikes, dagos, pollacks, krauts, slants, micks, redskins, injuns, gooks, spooks, squaws, honky, crackers, ragheads, towel heads, nips, etc. Racists and xenophobics use the term to make sure that we understand that those ppl are not like us... and inferior to boot.

From Wikipedia: "Nigger / nigra / nigga / niggah / nigguh
(U.S., UK) An offensive term for a black person. From the word negro, which means the color black in numerous languages. Diminutive appellations include Nigg and Nigz. Over time, the terms nigga and niggaz (plural) have come to be frequently used between some African-Americans without the negative associations of nigger."
IKR. Why people have to justify the use of the word with semantic arguments is beyond me.

Ah, and Into the night is opening antiquities to defend the KKK. How endearing.

We actually, "honkey" etymology is from the Aramaic hogla from the dead sea scrolls, as transcribed by Herodotus in 400 BC. Leaves you sorta breathless, don't it?

It's like a Tony award. Faint praise. I'll be disappointed if I am left out of the post hoc category this year.

Because 1) they are racist, and 2) they stupidly equate offensive names for ppl who ain't like them as "free speech."

Wikipedia summarily dismissed as a reference. You cannot use it as a reference with me. It's articles are biased, incomplete, badly worded, or even outright wrong.

I don't believe you. If you did, you would understand the word is not always used in a derogatory manner.

Code for: "Oh fuck, you proved me wrong so I must attack your source!"

Even though my first paragraph was my own and did not come from Wikipedia or any other source other than my own excellent memory, and my own knowledge of etymology.

Do you think you can stop being a racist some day soon?

It's not offensive today, not unless it is used in a derogatory manner. It simply means 'black'.
