An artificial intelligence expert and venture capitalist predicts automation will cause major changes in the workforce.
Speaking to CBS News’ Scott Pelley in an interview for 60 Minutes on Sunday, Kai Fu Lee said that he believes 40% of the world’s jobs will be replaced by robots capable of automating tasks. He said that both blue collar and white collar professions will be affected, but he believes those who drive for a living could be most affected.
“Chauffeurs, truck drivers, anyone who does driving for a living—their jobs will be disrupted more in the 15-25 year time frame,” he said in the interview. “Many jobs that seem a little bit complex, chef, waiter, a lot of things will become automated.”

This is a good thing, freeing up men and women to explore and experience and contribute to the world in which they live. A national robotics labor tax will easily provide a sufficient UBI for each person with a corresponding boost to the consumer economy. The rich will get richer, so will the average Joe and Joanna.

AI will replace "repetitive" jobs--those tasks that can be automated like robots are doing in factories. It will also potentially replace many "white-collar" tasks in the fields of accounting, healthcare, marketing, law, hospitality, and other areas.
I'm retired, was in the accounting field.

I remember reading, back in the 60s, that automation was going to spell the end for most factory jobs. And so it was. It's only going to continue, as robotics progress.

A labor force being freed up for arts, leisure, and science because of the AI and revolution is no different than the nomad tribe moving into the first village.

And it will create as many. It's going to be a displacement and training problem.
Time to start talking about a UBI.

Hello dukkha,
Actually that will work. No, of course we can't tax the robots. Robots are not employees and earn no wage. These workers are owned by their employers. It is the new slavery! The ultimate in profit-making potential. WHAT? Did I use the 'P'- word? Yes. Profits. Ultimate profits with no labor cost. The super-rich owners of robots will be making way more profits than they already are. (As if they are not rich enough already - duh - they passed 'rich enough' a long time ago.) Those profits are where the money will come from to pay a UBI.
The problem with NOT pay a UBI is there won't be enough customers with money to buy the products.
The problem with eliminating labor is that also eliminates the customer base.
Once the super-rich have all the money, and nobody else has any, the economy will shut down and go into deep recession, into depression.
We are going to have two choices.
Either tax the rich more to pay for massive government assistance programs or tax the rich more to just pay out a UBI.
Refusal to do one or the other will lead to massive disenchantment and revolt. The USA simply cannot function without enough work for everybody.
Conservatives want to cut taxes for the rich and cut income for the rest.
Their problem is: that cuts the economy, and cuts revenue.
The result is bankrupted government, and bankrupted populace.
