"Today, when something like that happens, there is almost no controversy at all. Americans can’t be bothered to debate the tendency of law enforcement to treat alleged criminals as a wartime enemy and employ military tactics to destroy the enemy. War is the health of the state, and the war on terror, along with all the traumatized veterans filling the ranks of domestic federal and local police agencies, have begun to bring the war to American soil. Yet it seems every week the public debate is about something infinitely trivial compared to the very real tyranny at our doorsteps."

You may have missed the premise of the exchange. It was about Waco. A Government Death Squad (probably like something from Latin America) sent in to 'neutralize' a 'Public Threat'.
As it turned out, it was just an 'Exercise' to show Congress why the ATF needed MORE money for their Bureaucracy. The proceeding 'Government Propaganda' was certainly spot on, convincing Americans that this needed to be done.
Earl. Let me ask you, if Trump used Helicopter Gunships and Battle Tanks on the Democratic Headquarters (because Pedophilia, Meth Labs, and ... sex rings) would you be opposed to that?
How many police officers were killed at the Waco standoff?
Why do you hate the police?

"Washington, D.C. was of course mostly Black. And it would likely be mostly Black people who would feel the brunt of the new policy. And so here was the aging, towering figure of a senator, nearing the end of his career, standing as the only member of the U.S. Senate who was outraged at this bill that would allow narcotics cops to smash into their homes without first knocking and announcing themselves."
"In 1971 President Nixon issued an executive order that vastly expanded the power of a creepy federal agency called the Subversive Activities Control Board (SACB). Nixon authorized the SACB to investigate essentially anyone Nixon deemed to be an enemy. When Ervin heard about this, he went ballistic, and set about to override the order. With a number of parliamentary maneuvers and some impassioned speeches in defense of the First Amendment, he succeeded in effectively cutting off funding to the board, causing its demise."
