There are actually no species of guitar tone woods that are extinct. Some of them are very heavily controlled though. The most seriously endangered are Madagascar ebony(for guitar fingerboards)and some species of mahogany. Luthiery is NOT responsible for the endangerment of these species, these are beautiful woods in high demand for many purposes.

What it boils down to is, Gilmour said he did this to hopefully have a future where children could play those guitars and sing songs. The future of those guitars is in a vault in some millionaire's basement, where every once in awhile he'll pull one out and continue his 45 year quest to learn Stairway to Heaven, or maybe he'll get into the investment side. And 1954 Stratocaster #0001 belongs in an American museum!
