may 23 2019 Waves of anger, grief and remorse flooded the courtroom Thursday when Scott Hahn was sentenced to 37 years in prison for killing a Bayonne man and his 5-year-old daughter in a drug-fueled crash in 2016.
Hahn, who was on multiple drugs at the time of the crash and had not slept in 24 hours, continued saying, “Every day I live in terror of what is going to happen to the O’Donnell family. Every day I live in terror of what is going to happen to me when all this is over, when my life is over … I know my sorry sounds so small, but I’m sorry.”
In March, a jury convicted Hahn of two counts each of aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide and drug possession. He had no previous contacts with the justice system.
At the sentencing, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hernandez noted that Hahn “crashed into the back of that vehicle driving 10 times the speed limit... Imagine the destruction that did.”
He also noted Hahn’s horrendous driving record going back to 1998, saying there is “a clear history that this man, prior to this incident, drove incredibly recklessly.” But the prosecutor also said he realized that the death by auto counts would merge into the aggravated manslaughter counts.
