The U.S. beer industry is blaming a jobs hangover on the Trump administration’s tariffs.

A report by two trade groups showed U.S. beer-industry jobs dropped 40,000 since 2016 as metal tariffs boosted aluminum-can costs, leading to a drop in investment. The biennial study by the Beer Institute and National Beer Wholesalers Association said direct, indirect and induced jobs fell to 2.19 million in 2018 from 2.23 million in 2016.

“Aluminum tariffs are increasing brewers’ costs and are an anchor on a vibrant industry,” Jim McGreevy, the chief executive officer of the Beer Institute in Washington, said in an emailed statement. “Each brewer is deciding for themselves how to absorb that expense, whether it’s raising prices, laying off workers or delaying innovation and expansion.”
Aluminum traders expect higher costs to ship metal into U.S. Midwest

The shipping and logistics charge for delivering aluminum to the U.S. Midwest, known as the “premium,” more than doubled as Trump slapped a 10% tariff on imports of the metal. Molson Coors Brewing Co. estimated last year that the levies would create a $40 million hit to its bottom line.

The Aluminum Association’s Trade Enforcement working Group has had a problem with China trade policy for years. In the late 90’s US production was about 84% for domestic aluminum. Now it’s 69%.
Why the drop? Unfair trade practices by China.
The Aluminum Association wants a level trade playing field with China. They want an end to government subsidies. The aluminum industry is heavily subsidized by the Chinese government.
The industry wants US trade laws enforced. Wow what a novel idea.
They want the Chinese to stop misclassifying their shipments.

Eight aluminum smelters have closed or are operating at lower levels since 2014, a loss of 9K jobs (Obama’s fault).
Only two smelters today are operating a full capacity.

In 2000 China produced 11% of the world aluminum, now its 50%.

For all you environment alarmist, you might want to take the next plane to China to demonstrate. Coal reliant Chinese aluminum is the most carbon intensive in the world. The Chinese smelters are one of the highest contributor to global carbon emissions.

My point, is that the world is not as simple as the simple minded people on this forum. We have an idiot that posts jobs are lost in the beer industry. There is no thought processes as to other causes such as lower demand ( just lets get Trump), no thought process to why the tariffs were imposed and how it may or may not benefit other industries.

The bottom line is China has been screwing us over for years.
