Default More than 75 universities now host blacks-only graduation ceremonies

This month and next dozens of universities across the nation, from private top-tier schools to public state institutions, will host segregated graduation ceremonies and celebrations for their black graduates.

The Klan would say, “that is great, we need to do more”

Maybe they will start demanding their own water fountains and seating sections on public transport.

Can you imagine holding white only, or straight only graduations? ‘Diversity’ for thee, but not for me.

I wonder if any of those universities host white only ceremonies?

No. The Klan wouldn't say that, since this isn't a matter of barring blacks from the general graduation ceremony, but rather a matter of having an additional ceremony to celebrate those graduations. This is more like having a private graduation party.

Leaving aside volstrock's racism the article in the OP is a legitimate discussion. I've heard differing opinions from black commentators. I wouldn't say it's monolithic that the black community fully supports these separate type ceremonies (a lot do but not everyone).

Presumably not. The idea behind a special graduation ceremony for blacks (which, by the way, are often open to other races) is getting an under-represented minority group together for an additional ceremony that celebrates what is (due to institutional racism) an extraordinary accomplishment in that group. If you look at black graduation rates, it's clear there are unique challenges for black students on the path to getting into and through college, and so there's an additional layer of celebration for those who do so. Whites, by comparison, are disproportionately likely to get into and through college, so it wouldn't make sense to have an extra celebration to acknowledge extra challenges.

If it helps, try to think of this in terms of other affinity groups that do their own extra thing for graduation. For example, at the university I attended, there was a special Mass for Catholics to celebrate commencement. There's also "ROTC graduation," just for those going into the military. And athletic teams often have their own special ceremonies for out-going seniors. It's no big deal.

Can't really blame them for wanting to stay away from people like you

Most university graduation ceremonies consist of a majority white students. What would an all white ceremony consist of that a majority white doesn't?

Excluding a group of people because of their race is called racial discrimination.

Regardless of circumstances, excluding a group of people because of their race is called racial discrimination.

I'm not saying folks can't disagree with this but no one is excluded. It's for black graduates but they didn't exclude other races. Anyone could attend.
