I'd sure like to see examples of cities run by reupubs that have this problem.
Well first I'd like to see examples of cities run by repubs. I'll bet the crime rate is relatively low in them.

Boomers are f'ing you. But Gen Z is getting f'd as well as they're the one's paying the price in school's today. From the OP:

""This is from a recent Brookings Institution note.

Pension and health-benefit costs are bending education finances in California to their will. The sheer magnitude of the rising costs is staggering. Large numbers of school board officials who participated in our survey indicate that the rising costs are meaningfully affecting educational services. For example, many report making cost-saving changes to district budgets that include deferred maintenance, larger class sizes, and fewer enrichment opportunities for students in response to rising pension and health benefit costs.

So in effect, today’s students are paying to keep benefits flowing to retired teachers and administrators.""

The States with the biggest pension problems according to your source are Repbulican

Kentucky, good example, for years they underfunded the teachers pension system allocating money elsewhere, and when the shortage became noticeable, they went out and make it worse. Good luck recruiting good new teachers in Kentucky

Are we looking at the same chart?

The link in the OP shows the unfunded liability per capita of each state. The worst ten are New Mexico, New Jersey, Ohio, Nevada, Hawaii, Oregon, Illinois, California, Connecticut, Alaska.

Sailor the idiot. Pensions are negotiated by labor and gubmint management. If pensions are to large, that means management is too soft.

Sorry your peeps are sooo weak. PAY UP buttercup!
Can't see the OP, but typically muni pensions are in direct correlation to lower annual pay raises. In essence, the govts. kick the can down the road.
And now they just screw all the retirees after the fact.

I'm not a union guy. Yes...many are pretty fat. My buddies make more in retirement than they did while working, but many county/state workers don't get SS. In many cases, they go years without raises in exchange for better retirement.

My problem is with the orgs. who don't honor pensions after the workers have gone without when they were working.

The issue is politicians would rather give public employees bigger pensions than increased pay today because it allows them to kick the bucket on paying down the road in regards to cost. Thus we see these massive unfunded liabilities today. And as the OP shows services are being cut as pension payments have to be made.

The thing is the issue is not going away. We can continue to try and bury our heads in the sand but ultimately it will come to a head and the results won't be pleasant.

Not all boomers are public union employees.
