Dang are you dense! There's basically 2 types of people that get that $2k idiot bonus: a high school kid with a part time job(they usually get back EVERYTHING they paid in, they're just giving the government a short term interest free loan, and learning to be good little tax payers)and married, claiming zero. People getting small or no idiot bonuses are either not making much, or making so much that they have to have an additional amount withheld over and above the standard withholding statuses, or they end up writing a HUGE check to the government every year. That's me. The good thing about it is, I can adjust the over and above amount to the point where I get a small refund, I get zero back, or I write a small check to the damn IRS. For 2016, I wrote a check for $48. For 2017(no russia tax cut, remember?)I got a idiot bonus of $666. I filled out a new W-4, reducing my supplemental withholding by $55 a month(666 divided by 12). For 2018, I do my return and get ready to write a check, but to my chagrin, I find I am getting back $300! Back to the W-4 drawing board for another $25 dollar adjustment! The wonderful thing about this is, that money goes right back into my pocket and not to the government! It's almost like getting a raise. I know, I know...I'm lying. Whatever.
