I think what they've succeeded in doing is waking us up and giving us a painful but much needed lesson about what can happen when we get lazy and let our guard down with regards to our elections.

In a much less extreme way, the two of them may have had the same effect that Hitler ultimately had on German society or that Osama Bin Laden had on our attitudes towards Homeland Security.
