The U.S. Justice Department has made an immigration policy shift that could put many asylum seekers in jail until their claims can be processed.

Attorney General William Barr announced the change will take effect in three months.

It allows authorities to jail illegal immigrants without bail in federal facilities.

“The question presented is whether illegal aliens are eligible for bond,” Barr wrote in the announcement.

“I conclude that such illegal aliens remain ineligible for bond, whether they are arriving at the border or are apprehended in the United States.”

The new policy ends the “catch and release” process, in which illegal immigrants are released into the United States without restriction.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement jails 45,000 to 50,000 illegal immigrants per day, but cannot hold those smuggling children children for more than 20 days due to the Clinton Administration's Flores Agreement.

In March, 60 percent of the more than 100,000 apprehensions at the border were illegal immigrants claiming to be "families and unaccompanied children".

HE ONCE DEFENDED TRUMP

A man who was caught walking into New York's St Patrick's Cathedral with gas cans and lighter fluid is a PhD student who once wrote a defense of President Trump after he was criticized by the French.

Marc Lamparello, 37, entered the Manhattan church with the two gallon cans of gasoline before being apprehended by security at around 8 pm on Wednesday night.

He is a Boston College-educated philosophy professor who has taught at Lehman College and also held several roles in the Catholic church.

Police say it is too early to say whether the incident was terror-related but it comes two days after the Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris.

They later added that more cans of gasoline were found after searching the suspect's van.

TIME magazine’s 2019 list of the world’s 100 Most Influential People, published on Wednesday, includes the self-professed “proud” anti-semitic prime minister of Malaysia, who has publicly disparaged Jews as “hook-nosed.”

“There are many races in this world, I have said nasty things about them but they never accused me of being anti-this or anti-that,” he declared in response to criticism about his anti-semitic tendencies.

The magazine praised PM Mahathir Mohamad, who took office on May 2018, for coming out of retirement after ruling Malaysia for 22 years, adding: "The formidable old warhorse dazzled during a grueling campaign, gathering vast crowds; his reliance on core values united electoral groups, and his age inspired trust in a grand man of politics."
