A "foreign national" living in Ireland who "thought it was OK” to rape his step-daughter has been jailed for 12 years.
The 42-year-old "non-native", whose identity has not been disclosed, was found guilty of 17 sexual crimes against his step-child, and was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment on Monday.
The crimes were committed against the child when she was between the ages of 11 and 15 years old, occurring in the family home while her mother was out working.
The assaults began with oral rape in 2011, graduating onto rape “on a highly regular basis,” a police told prosecutors.
The abuse only stopped in 2017 when the girl made a complaint.
Her abuser had initially claimed that he "thought it was okay” to rape the child.

President Trump is shaking up the top ranks of the Department of Homeland Security and has instructed White House advisers to take a more direct role implementing immigration policy in an effort to slow the rise in foreigners illegally crossing the southern border.
Those efforts accelerated Sunday with the departure of Kirstjen Nielsen as secretary of the sprawling agency that oversees the U.S.’s immigration and national-security apparatus.
Last week, he pulled his nominee to run Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Randolph Alles, the Secret Service director who the White House said was departing on Monday, said in a memo to his staff that the administration had told him weeks ago that “transitions in leadership should be expected across the Department of Homeland Security.”
An administration official said President Trump recently told Stephen Miller, one of his most hard-line advisers: “You’re in charge” of the administration’s immigration policy.
White House officials are pushing the acting deputy secretary, Claire Grady, to resign, according to people familiar with the matter. The White House could fire her or move her to another post in the agency.
Arrests of migrants crossing the border illegally hit a record of 136,150, surpassing a record of 107,212.

A caravan-size influx of migrants is flooding across the border each week in just a single sector, a top Border Patrol official told lawmakers -- the latest indicator of the growing illegal immigration crisis on the southern border.
“Much attention has focused on caravans coming from Central America,” Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch said at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing. “But the fact is that my sector alone is receiving caravan-equivalent numbers every seven days.”
Karisch said his agents have apprehended people from 50 different countries, including China, Bangladesh, Turkey, Egypt and Romania.
“People are traveling across hemispheres to attempt to illegally enter the U.S., using the same pathways as the Central Americans,” he said.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended more than 76,000 migrants across the border in February and said it was on track to apprehend more than 100,000 in March.
Last week, Obama's Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan told senators that the U.S. is “experiencing a crisis at the southern border at a magnitude never seen in modern times.”

The White House is planning on targeting remittance payments made by illegal immigrants in the wake of an ongoing migrant flood at the U.S. southern border, a senior administration official told reporters.
The situation at the southern border has escalated in recent weeks, with thousands of foreign invaders arriving daily to claim asylum due to liberal laxity and questionable court rulings.
The illegal arrivals are spurred by DEMOCRAT-engineered loopholes in U.S. immigration law that allow anyone with a child in tow to be released into the interior of the country with a work permit.
The criminals are then given a court date to adjudicate their asylum claims. These people rarely show up.
The plans to target remittance payments come amid a shakeup at the Department of Homeland Security and coming executive actions to curb illegal immigration. This will be an effective way to compel the Mexican government to take more enforcement action against people trafficking through their country.
The threat of ending remittances from people in the United States illegally is a wake-up call to the Mexican government. In most years, it’s their second biggest source of foreign capital.
