Unions should matter "TO ME".....because "YOU" (communist, socialist, fascist) support them. Got it. Why not invoke the "workers of the world".....just like the Bolshevik communists or...….the national Workers party of Germany (Hitler)...etc.,

There is no difference. Once a commie always a commie. Right or left....a social fascist by another name is still a socialist promoting class warfare. FYI: All those evil rich assholes by majority (over 80%) came from the ranks of the worker. Who wants to perpetually be regulated to working from the neck down while carrying and eating from a brown paper bag?

Who wants to live like the Cubans, The Russians, the Greeks, the Italians, the French, the Canucks.....giving the majority of everything earned to the state to corrupt?

Our unions are not corrupt and run by flat nose thugs? Really? There is no history of these thugs robbing our pension funds...to the point they are begging Big Brother (we the tax payer) to bail them out.

The perfect example. General Motors, the UMWA, the Teamsters....all begging the tax payer (even those who refuse a closed shop). Why should "I" be forced to pay for YOUR CORRUPTION?

Even FDR (the biggest socialist in US HISTORY) declared that it was unconstitutional for our civil servants to be UNIONIZED.

If you want a union.....fine, pay the dues and assessments to the top brass in order for them to place who they want (not who you want) into political power (the perfect example is the UMWA and its support for Trump). You are free to do as much.....but you are not free to promote a closed shop through flat nose violent threats and intimidation.

The Labor Movement from Industrial Revolution to Now
The origin of labor unions dates back to the eighteenth century and the industrial revolution in Europe. During this time there was a huge surge of new workers into the workplace that needed representation.
In the United States history of unions, early workers and trade unions played an important part in the role for independence. Although their physical efforts for the cause of independence were ineffective, the ideas they introduced, such as protection for workers, became part of our American culture.
The Most Famous Labor Union in History
In the history of America's trade and labor unions, the most famous union remains the American Federation of Labor (AFL), founded in 1886 by Samuel Gompers. At its pinnacle, the AFL had approximately 1.4 million members. The AFL is credited with successfully negotiating wage increases for its members and enhancing workplace safety for all workers.
The Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) under John L. Lewis and the larger AFL federation underwent a huge expansion during World War II. The AFL-CIO merger occurred in 1955.
Union membership and power peaked around 1970. At that time, private sector union membership began a steady decline that continues today. However, membership in public sector unions continues to grow consistently.
According to the Department of Labor, the 2015 union membership rate was 11.1% and the number of workers belonging to unions was 14.8 million.

    Unions and Benefits

In 1986, the AFL-CIO created Union Privilege to offer Union Plus benefits to union members and their families. Union Plus offers over 20 benefits, including:

    American Labor Movement

The beginnings of the American labor movement
In the early years of the republic, efforts by tradesmen to create better conditions by refusing to work and trying to prevent others from working were considered criminal offenses. Journeymen boot-makers and shoe-makers were put on trial in Philadelphia in 1806 and convicted of criminal conspiracy. This set the standard attitude towards organized work disruptions until 1842, when the principle of criminal conspiracy was rejected by the Supreme Court of Massachusetts.

The New York Workingmen's Party lasted only a short time, formed in 1829 and disappearing in 1830. However, it publicized a new goal, the reduction of daily time of labor to ten hours. Since the work week was still six days, this radical demand was for no more than sixty hours of work a week.

Child Labor Reform: In the early decades of the twentieth century, the numbers of child laborers in the U.S. peaked. Child labor began to decline as the labor and reform movements grew and labor standards in general began improving, increasing the political power of working people and other social reformers to demand legislation regulating child labor. Union organizing and child labor reform were often intertwined, and common initiatives were conducted by organizations led by working women and middle class consumers, such as state Consumers’ Leagues and Working Women’s Societies. These organizations generated the National Consumers’ League in 1899 and the National Child Labor Committee in 1904, which shared goals of challenging child labor, including through anti-sweatshop campaigns and labeling programs.

History of Child Labor in America
There had always been forms child labor in America that ranged from the enforced work of indentured servitude to child slavery. But child labor also provided the help needed in farming families and communities. Child labor was needed in the rural farming areas, dictated by essential daily chores and the requirements of the agricultural seasons. Poor families relied upon child labor in order to attain basic necessities and living essentials. The jobs allocated to children depended on their age and whether they were boys or girls.

Farm work could be hard, but working conditions were not dangerous and at least allowed kids to breath the fresh air. The use of child labor, and the risks and working conditions of children, underwent a enormous change in the 1800's. Industry developed on an extensive scale and the mechanization of industry resulted in the abuse of children who were forced to work in terrible conditions in factories, mines and mills. This article provides the history of child labor in America during the 1800's, the following links provide facts and information about events that were particularly relevant to the subject of child labor
