He wanted more money from his show. He figured his lie was believable, and it would make people feel sympathetic towards him, thus making him more valuable. He wasn't trying to start a race war, it was just good old fashioned greed.

I never heard them say that. They have tried to spin the story into saying White Nationalist violence is on the rise, which probably isn't true, but they didn't say he represented most white people.
