Thumbs down US planning to leave 1K troops in Syria:

The U.S. military is reportedly making plans to keep almost 1,000 troops in Syria, several months after President Trump said he was removing all U.S. forces from the country.

Citing U.S. officials, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the Trump administration plans to continue supporting Kurdish fighters in Syria.

The officials reportedly added that the plan could keep as many as 1,000 forces across the country, but said the specific number of troops that will remain is still being determined.

The U.S. will start withdrawing hundreds of troops after it defeats the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to the Journal.

Trump has repeatedly claimed since December that ISIS has been fully defeated in the region.

“You kept hearing it was 90 percent, 92 percent, the caliphate in Syria. Now it’s 100 percent, we just took over,” Trump said during remarks to troops last month. "Now it’s 100 percent, we just took over 100 percent caliphate. That means the area of the land. We just have 100 percent.”

Lawmakers in Congress and U.S. officials, however, have maintained that ISIS hasn't been completely defeated.

Gen. Joseph Votel, the top military commander in charge of the fight against the Islamic State, told CNN last month that ISIS "still has leaders, still has fighters, it still has facilitators, it still has resources."

The move to keep troops in the country comes after Trump in December said he would immediately remove all of the roughly 2,000 U.S. troops in the country, an announcement that prompted the resignation of then-Defense Secretary James Mattis.

The Trump administration then said last month that it was planning to leave about 400 U.S. troops in Syria.

James Jeffrey, the U.S. diplomat who oversees the global campaign against ISIS, told the Journal that the U.S. military presence in Syria a "force for stability" in the region.

“We well understand that an American military presence — and the numbers and functions can go up and down — is a force for stability and collective security in the region,” he said.

I vehemently disagree with you about this, I frankly do not understand your objections to protecting the Kurds. If you think they are just pawns to be sacrificed in a lethal chess game then that's just not on in my book.

The Northern Federation needs a deal with the Assad Government. They want to be part of Syria as an autonomous region, sorta' like what the Kurds have in Iraq. The Russians, Assad, and the Americans should all be able to agree upon this, with some kind of reassurance to the Turks.

This article is a bit dated, but it shows Turkey trades*with Iraqi Kurdistan. The same can be had with Syrian Kurdistan.
"Turkey and Iraq’s current trade is about $8 billion, $2.5 billion of which comes from the Kurdistan Region, according to the Minister.
A significant number of Turkish nationals have invested in the Region."

"The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES), commonly referred to as Rojava, is a de facto autonomous region in northeastern Syria. It consists of self-governing sub-regions in the areas of Afrin, Jazira, Euphrates, Raqqa, Tabqa, Manbij and Deir Ez-Zor.[5][6] The region gained its de facto autonomy in 2012[7] as part of the ongoing Rojava conflict and the wider Syrian Civil War. While entertaining some foreign relations, the region is not officially recognized as autonomous by the government of Syria or any international state or organization.[8][9] Northeastern Syria is polyethnic and home to sizeable ethnic Kurdish, Arab and Assyrian populations; with smaller communities of ethnic Turkmen, Armenians and Chechens.[10][11]"

    Sometimes all your options stink.

As they say, if you want a guarantee, buy a toaster at Walmart.

Nobody wants Iran to take control of Syria and they will.. That would be a problem for the Israelis.

And, obviously there's concern for the Kurds.

you wanna put some Brits up there between the Turks and the Kurds?
Funny how you don't mind US Perpetual presence but the Brits are bugging out after the ISIS mop ups .

When did I ever say the Kurds were just pawns? I have much respect for the Kurds and the Peshmerga and the YPG
I said they are in an untenable position to get a state because of the Turks

As I tried to point out, Erdogan and the Turks trade with the existing Iraqi Kurdistan. The same arrangement could be had with the Syrian Kurdistan (the Northern Federation/Rojava).

This is dated but shows cooperation between Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan.
"The Kurdistan Region has billions of proven oil reserves that export 600,000 oil barrels per day to Turkey’s Ceyhan port which is then transferred to the international oil markets."

It's their Constitution you should look at.

    "Democratic Federation of Northern Syria"

"The Constitution of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria,[1][2] officially titled Charter of the Social Contract, is the provisional constitution of the self-proclaimed autonomous region of Syria known as the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS). It was adopted on 29 January 2014, when the Democratic Union Party (PYD), claiming to represent the DFNS population, declared the three DFNS regions it controls autonomous from the Syrian government.[1] Article 12 states the DFNS remains an "integral part of Syria", tentatively implementing an expected future federal Syrian governance in Northern Syria.[3]"

"The constitution has gained much international attention and is most noted for its explicit affirmation of minority rights and gender equality and a form of direct democracy known as 'democratic confederalism'.[4][5]"

    Read the last sentence twice.
