The bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler have been held up by President Obama and his supporters as a great success story — proof that, by working together, government and business can save jobs and strengthen the economy. But this popular narrative is dangerously misleading.

Technically, GM has repaid its big bailout loan from the U.S. government. But the Feds are likely to be out $10 billion when all is said and done. Here's why. GM has done its share, but taxpayers are still in the hole GM received a total of $49.5 billion from the U.S. government as part of its "bailout.". That money funded GM's high-speed bankruptcy proceeding and allowed the company to get back on its feet once it had exited bankruptcy in mid-2009.

NO! Bush started the Bank bailouts. Obama continued them and added the Auto manufactures bailouts.

Saving the Big 3 saved hundreds of thousands of jobs. It was a great deal for the country. Obama did the right thing. Yep, they are closing factories and reopening others. Trump said they would not. he lied.

No surprise here Nodi that you thought it was a wonderful deal. Of course, every damned fool knows that handing over taxpayers billions to Giant "CAPITALIST" corporations, letting them stiff the taxpayers for ten billion in promised repayment, then close up plants in states where Trump beat Hillary is a magnificent deal. Wonder if those auto workers weren't UNION workers if Obama would have been so intent on saving their jobs? What do you think good friend?

It is about the jobs ,when were shedding thousands a month. Last month of Bush, we lost 800,000 jobs in a month. Yeah, we needed jobs. Sometimes you have to do the imperfect to accomplish goals. Unions had nothing to do with it . Obama was not involved in an intricate plot. He was just trying to put people back to work.

Ford didn't take any bailout money. So Obama didn't "save the big 3."
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

It was a great deal. it saved countless jobs and we got every dime back. not to mention not having to pay unemployment when all those jobs would have been lost.

Obama's plan was genius. Unions had skin in the game, and would now be bargaining against themselves during labor talks.

Funny how trump takes credit for a stable economy that was handed to him, but trumpkins are blaming Obama for the decline in domestic companies due to trump's tariffs.

You really can't make this stuff up.
