Default The Will of the People

We lived for many decades in Missouri before retiring to the Frozen North. In that time, the legislature and governor's office became solidly, veto-proof, red. Also during that time, voters passed various measures that were then overturned by the legislature. Concealed carry. "Puppy mill" legislation. Minimum wage raises in KC and STL. Now they are planning on eviscerating the new Sunshine Law recently passed by voters.

"KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some Missouri lawmakers are working to overturn a law that 62 percent of voters approved.

Does your vote really matter? That is a valid question in Missouri.

In 2003, voters approved an anti-conceal carry law; lawmakers overturned it. In 2011 voters approved Prop B, regulating puppy mills; lawmakers overturned it.

Now, "Clean Missouri" is at risk of being overturned. " (source: https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news...ency-amendment )

What is your opinion on this? Fair political play?

    Maybe this is why?

"Missouri’s U.S. Senator Josh Hawley [R] has been subpoenaed in a case involving possible violations of the state’s public records law when he served as Missouri attorney general.
"The subpoena came from Missouri’s 19th Circuit Court in Cole County. Hawley is ordered to give depositions and bring all documents and notes involving his campaign donors, consultants and state employees.
“This is a political stunt by a political candidate,” said Kelli Ford, spokesperson for Hawley, via email. “It’s unfortunate that Democrat operatives continue to misuse our courts of law for political purposes.”" [emphasis mine]

Part of the reason why we left. lol

Seriously though, what if this becomes a trend across the nation? I'm sure Missouri isn't the only state with legislators subverting the will of the ppl.

The party that routinely wins the presidency and is given a stranglehold on the federal government despite losing the national popular vote has never believed in, let along been willing to defend, western liberal democracy. Gerrymandering election results, and voter suppression are all part and parcel of thwarting the will of the people.

I am convinced that Soviet leaders told Ronald Reagan to go fuck himself when he tried to lecture them about the superiority of western democracy and free and fair elections - because they could see straight through the hypocrisy that was being served up to them.

Have you heard of any other states doing this kind of thing? Missouri can't be the only one.

Worse yet, newly elected Dem governors were having their power stripped by state legislators/governors before they took office
Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

You mean like when California voters rejected gay marriage, but the state legislature overturned the will of the people? Like that? I think it's wrong.

As for what is specifically happening in Missouri, I cannot say I am knowledgable enough to say what other states it is happening in.
I believe ballot propositions in California are immune to legislators excercising veto authority over - the only recourse I am aware of in California is to challenge the constitutionality of a voter-approved proposition in court. The legislators do not get a say in it.

Outlawing Conceal Carry could only be constitutionally legal if at the same time Reveal Carry were legalized.

I've been saying for years on this board that votes don't really matter.

Until the electoral college is terminated and republicans are actually held accountable for their cheating...…..we will never have fair elections and that includes state wide elections.

Why would you make that assertion about a state you do not live in, and where you really did not even know if what you claimed were true or not? You made the claim with absolute assuredness.

"The California State Legislature may not amend or repeal an approved measure without submitting the change to voters."

The constitutionality of Proposition 8 was challenged in Court - which is exactly the way a democratic republic is supposed to work, and that is exactly what the courts are for.
