No, there's nothing in the statute saying it has to be a tangible asset. As you can see from the link you shared, that's not the way the term is used in the law -- there are many things expressly listed in that definition that are intangible -- for example, forgiveness of debt, a right of action, services, etc. Did you share the link without first reading the page?
Opposition research is, of course, a thing of value. There's a reason that candidates pay consultants, all the time, to do opposition research. It is a thing that is seen as having great value to a campaign. The reason you want to assert otherwise has nothing at all to do with legal precedent or common sense. It's pure politics. You want the Trump campaign to be innocent of lawbreaking, so you're reading things into the law to excuse what they did.
