There is no first rate train system in the US. Amtrak's speed is an issue for most...Chicago to Detroit takes eight hours...and that's not even a long trip. As far as ridership is concerned...the only thing you could use to predict that would be bullet trains abroad.

It's not all about ridership money either. California is looking to take cars off the road.

That being said, those who say such a project doesn't deserve federal money may get their way.

The problem with the project besides the cost is the distance. Instead of building to San Francisco (400 miles) they are only building to Bakersfield (171 miles).
Price of the ticket will determine if people will continue to drive or take the train.
Location of the stations is a factor. Are the stations close to work or will they have to transfer to a bus or metro.
Lower income people will continue to ride the bus. They aren’t moving out of the intercity.

They have a metro and light rail system in place. I don’t understand why they didn’t extend the tracks to the system that already exits.

I don't see any other top 10 world economy begging for help from their neighboring states. Truth: California does not have a wealth problem...but a mis-management problem. A state like California should not need any federal assistance....the reason it does, the high cost of living, some of the highest taxes on personal property, gas, water, etc. in the civilized world...not to mention the care and upkeep of millions of ILLEGAL immigrants it calls CITIZENS. When adjusted for inflation....California does not have the world's 5th or 6th GDP......it is ranked at number 11.

More importantly.....states like TEXAS has the world's 7th largest MILITARY. If there is no method of protecting your rights...what rights do you expect to keep?

The project that was projected to cost 45 billion will now cost 77 billion
You forgot to mention that 64% don’t want the rail system.
Do you really think people will give up their cars. The lower income bracket won’t be allow to afford a ticket. Besides their low paying jobs are local. Who will ride your train?
You also failed to mention the federal government gave the money with the understanding California would build the rails from LA to San Francisco and there is no such plan.
Because of the cost they will only build rails for 171 miles not the 400 miles that California sold to the feds.

Well Mr. 5th largest economy you don’t need federal dollars. Waste your own money. California lost 2.5 percent of its population to domestic migration. When you increase taxes for the train project watch more leave the state. Try collecting revenue from the hugh homeless population or the illegals. Good luck.

Somehow, you forget to mention that this was Ahnold's baby, and he underestimated the cost. Couple that with the fact that he planned on private investment, which is never reliable for infrastructure projects.
