This is consistent with altruism because it is in our own self interest to help others. What goes around comes around.
For instance, if you have a regular chess partner and you are quite superior, it is to your own benefit to help them improve.
If you don't help them, you continue to slaughter them. The games become all too predictable and neither player improves. The exercise becomes boring.
If you do help them, you gain a more worthy opponent, forcing you to improve your own game. Thus, you both benefit. With the outcome unknown, the games take on more interest.
What goes around comes around.
Oh, btw, you should be commended for correctly deducing early on that Smollet faked the attack. Definitely a half-baked cookie, there!
